Cyber Fair: The Mind is a Battlefield (Escape from Club Apophis, 35)

STORYLINE: The Jae Won University Stadium burned like a crown of thorns. Rows of plastic seats melted into crooked black smiles, and the scoreboard flickered above them, its numbers dissolving into meaningless static. Ash drifted through the dead wind like red snow.

Jihoon knelt in the dirt of the pitcher’s mound, his breath coming in thin, burning pulls.

Across the diamond, Lathandro twirled a charred baseball bat slowly in one hand. Casual. Patient. Like a man warming up before a game already won. He looked flawless in his white uniform, shoes clean, collar crisp, entirely untouched by the smoke and ruin.

"Do you hear them?" Lathandro asked lightly, his voice carrying over the crackle of the flames.

Voices echoed faintly through the smoke. Muffled. Distant. Real. Jihoon lifted his head. The sky above the dreamscape trembled.

"They’re worried," Lathandro said, a cruel smirk touching his perfect lips. "How sweet."

The scent of clove.

It drifted through the acrid smoke, ancient and entirely out of place.

Jihoon looked towards the scent.

Suddenly, the bat came down. Crack.

Light exploded behind Jihoon’s eyes. He collapsed into the dirt, tasting copper and ash.

"You don't deserve your best friends. You didn't even tell them your birthday," Lathandro continued conversationally, stepping over him. "But I understand."

Another swing. Crack.

"You were born under a bad star, the asteroid Apophis," Lathandro whispered, crouching beside him. "An ill omen. The day that almost ended the world. Imagine how they’d react if they knew you were always cursed."

The crack rang in Jihoon's skull.

"You always knew something was wrong with you. Too quiet. Too strange. Too afraid to exist properly. You watched life from the bleachers while better people played the game." He spread his arms to the burning stadium. "But me? I am the player."

The glitching scoreboard above the stadium spasmed back to life, letters crawling through static until they held in place.

Lathandro glanced up at the board and smiled faintly. “Scorekeeping matters.”

Suddenly, the ground convulsed. A violent earthquake ripped through the dreamscape, collapsing a section of the bleachers. Jihoon’s real body was being moved.

Through the fissures in the sky, a voice bled through. Deep, broken, and wet.

Kyle.

“He didn’t want this! Look at him! Jihoon never wanted to be a monster!” Kyle’s voice cracked with a guilt so profound it made the ground in the dreamscape shudder. Kyle, the guy who treated joy like a personal insult, was weeping for him.

Jihoon flinched and closed his eyes.

"Oh?" Lathandro murmured, his eyes narrowing. He raised the bat. "Still clinging to them? Pathetic. Just forget them already."

Before the bat could fall, a new voice sliced through the haze, cold and sharp with fury. He knew that voice. The nurse from the hospital.

“You think MasterGin forced this upon him?” Her voice sneered from the waking world. “You think your precious friend is a victim? Look at the footage, you ignorant children. He begged for it.”

The melting jumbo screen flickered violently. Then a new image forced itself across the burning pixels. It was shaky halophone footage from inside the velvet madness of Club Apophis.

Jihoon saw his own face, his old, unremarkable face, looking up at the towering silhouette of MasterGin.

Something inside Jihoon recoiled. The words felt familiar. Like overhearing himself through a wall.

“I’m tired of being a nobody. Tired of being weak. I can't even tell the girl I like how I feel,” his old self on the screen whispered, his voice trembling with raw, desperate hunger. “I don’t want to be small anymore....”

"Forget it!" Lathandro roared, his composure snapping. He brought the bat down viciously. "Forget! Let it go! I am the one keeping us alive! Your life ended the moment you walked into Club Apophis. Mine is just beginning!"

The bat came down again. Crack.

The scoreboard clicked.

HITS: 348

Above them, the real world was descending into chaos.

“He's coming. Enforcers in the corridor,” Paine’s voice snapped. “Here. Take this. Go.”

Jihoon's heart sank. But then, a hand reached through the sensory void. It was warm. Small. Real. He felt it.

Minjo’s voice broke through the static, closer than the rest. “Jihoon.”

Her hand tightened around his. “I thought sunscreen would be enough.” The words trembled, then hardened.

For a moment she said nothing. The silence carried everything she couldn’t.

“I will not fail you again.” Her grip tightened. “I don’t care what they are. Vampires. Cults. Gods.”

A breath against his cheek. “I watched you burn. Your arms on fire reaching to me, begging me to save you. So that's what I'll do. This is not over.” A pause. “Do you hear me?”

He felt the whisper of her lips against his cheek. Warm. Human. Alive.

Her touch was real. A kiss.

A jolt of pure, living electricity shot through his paralyzed limbs.

"Forget her!" Lathandro roared, swinging the bat for a final, memory-erasing blow.

Jihoon moved.

He didn't dodge. He reached up and caught the barrel of the bat, his bare, bloody hands stopping the wood cold.

Lathandro's grip faltered. Something crossed his perfect face that had no name in his vocabulary. The firelight flickered across their mirrored faces. One majestic, one bruised and bleeding.

"I kept you alive," Lathandro hissed.

Jihoon tightened his grip on the wood, staggering to his feet. "I know," he rasped, looking his shadow dead in the eye. "But you’re not all I am."

Jihoon twisted. The bat tore free from Lathandro’s grip. With a snarl of all his pent-up rage, he swung it back and cracked it across Lathandro's flawless jaw.

The scoreboard shrieked with feedback. The team names scrambled like a broken machine, then went dark.

The beautiful boy spun and collapsed into the ash. Knocked out cold.

The moment Lathandro fell, the inferno shattered like glass. The nightmare purgatory of Jihoon’s death dissolved, replaced instantly by the familiar, damp neon of the alleyway outside his old dorm. A mechanical bark echoed through the brick corridor. Scrappy 2 bounded from the shadows, tail wagging.

Jihoon dropped the bat, his chest heaving. He screamed at the sky, "Minjo! I'm here!"

But the voices were fading. The heavy, rhythmic clicking of MasterGin’s heels approached in the real world. His friends were gone. They had fled. But he was still unconscious in the heart of Monstrum.

The alley lights suddenly dimmed. Neon signs flickered. A low hum vibrated in the ground.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

The slow, deliberate sound of applause drifted from the shadows of the alleyway.

Jihoon spun around.

A towering silhouette stepped into the dim light, draped in black, his golden dreadlocks arranged like a Pharaoh’s nemes. The air immediately chilled, smelling of ancient stone and clove cigarettes.

The Ruler of the Night looked down at Lathandro's unconscious body, then up to Jihoon, his gold eyes bright with something that might have been amusement if amusement could also be a threat.

"I have watched this infestation try to break you," the Ruler said, his voice a resonant baritone that vibrated in Jihoon's chest. "You have proven yourself. I did not expect such resilience from a human. It is fortunate your rescuers forced my Lucien to move you away from that cursed energy."

Jihoon backed up, his hands trembling. "Who are you?"

The ancient vampire took a slow drag from his cigarette, the embers flaring orange in the dark.

"I am known by many titles," he purred smoothly. "But you may think of me as the Instrument of Order. My servant, the Instrument of Chaos, has laid a claim on your flesh, but I see you are not entirely his." The Ruler extended a massive, armored hand toward Jihoon. "Let us speak of a mutually beneficial arrangement. A deal to balance the scales."

Jihoon looked at the extended hand, then at Scrappy sitting patient in the neon dark, then back at the oldest person he had ever seen.



When I saw STOP's robot dog, thought I had gone to heaven for a moment. Its perfect. And perfect for for this story as the dream symbol of Minjo, guarding poor Jihoon. Lovely. Just lovely. ... Blaze is his real name, and he comes in different color selections. You just wear him, and he's fully animated with cool sci-fi noises. The Hud can change its LED glow color. He's a good boy.   ....From Diaboli Designs is Voidcore boots. Like all DD boots, it comes with a hud full of texture options and texture animations. It's so fun. I went with a Lime Green ad Black look to match the jacket.   ...Savage's Yuri Jacket has backpack built in the back.  The front can your pick from several colors, and the back and backpack are black.   ...Matching the lime theme is the T-AB headphones by Lavu.  You can get in several colors, and then modify is even more with a hud. The headphones are unrigged and mod, so you can get a perfect fit.   ... In the background, I used the mod version of ZEROICHI's KABUKI X Backdrop. Its detailed L shaped set with built in lights and PBR textures. With the mod version you can tint, or move pieces around. It includes stand alone props bottles, and an option without built in lighting.   ...And a subtle detail in the back, is the EC3D neon sign of the Dog which I combined with the ZEROICHI's Love sign.  ... Just an another little nod to our Snow White (Jihoon) finally getting that kiss from his love (Minjo) that awakens, not his body, but his agency. -- My own cyber twist to the famous fairytale.

Necrotize: Incubation

STORYLINE: Crewmen Stephan couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. The cargo freighter USS Charon was dead in the water near the Scheol Nebula. Unless he could find the problem and make the necessary repairs, he was stuck until help arrived. And since that could take years, it was up to him to fix it, no matter how much his skin crawled as he ventured deeper and deeper into the heart of the dilapidated spaceship. His stomach growled angrily. He hadn't been feeling well since he ate that lousy dinner on a passing freighter a month ago. "Never Again," he swore under his breath. No sooner had he opened a hatch in the floor, then something flew out and attached itself to his face. He screamed and clawed at it, gagging and thrashing wildly. Something going down his throat! But it was too late, a paralytic venom was already slowing his movements. His vision was blurred as a dark shape loomed over him. It knelt beside him, saying “Shhh, shhh..." and stroking his hair. Tears rolled down his eyes. What was it? It looked alien, but human too. The creature’s sharp claws were caressing him like a pet. "I know it hurts, my poison will kill the foreign food-born egg growing inside you." His limp body was picked up like he weighed nothing. The alien carried him to a hole melted in the ship's hull, and judging from the leaking fuel lines, this was most likely the cause of the engine failure. Another ship was attached outside. It's black surface gleamed and seemed alive with pulsing green goo in its biomechanical veins. "We are going to a safe place," his capturer said, "Nothing will ever hurt you again as long as you are with me."

ALIENS! HORROR! Necrotize is a unique event full of things to haunt your nightmares. This image was inspired by the tale of Hades and Persephone with an Aliens twist. On the Alien is the super cool Giger outfit by Somnium. It comes with an infection BOM tattoo which I combined with the Human Glitch Ncthr tattoo. The haunted Syrre Eyes are by Petrichor and have so many options, its great. Poor Stephan is wearing the Krova Animesh Facehugger, and Antaya Incubator attachment. I discovered it works on male and female avis that wear a layer alpha. His outfit is Orther by Asteroidbox. It has support for many mesh bodies, male, female, and the Mait flat like I used here. The gorgeous setting is Level 03 by Varonis. All these awesome items are at Necrotize, and there are gifts too in the Green Eggs.

The Engine Room: Spring Heeled Jack

STORYLINE: The Marquess of Waterford was a prankster with an aristocratic disregard for the law. Together with his merry gang of drunken hooligans, he terrorized the sweet young ladies of New London. It started with simple jump-scares from behind a bush or darkened alley, and grew into elaborate costumes and clever contraptions that gave him seemingly supernatural abilities. But with all his hilarious tabloid fame came a dark side, -- a deadly imitator. What had been fun and games was now dripping in blood. He was Public Enemy Number One. Of course he couldn't go to the police for help! After all, he wasn't leaping over tall buildings to get closer to his pursuers. No, this was his problem to solve. Could he discover the true serial killer's identity before he was unmasked as the Marquess and framed for the numerous grisly murders?

Mainframe: RAB8 and the Crystal Palace

STORYLINE: The crowd was cheering at the Crystal Palace. RAB8 was preparing to take the stage when gravity on the space station suddenly failed. Darkness. Emergency bots flicked on and buzzed around him. He heard gunshots. An explosion. People shouting... Alarms blaring. What the hell? Was the Space Station was under attack?

STORYLINE: The mournful sounds of a pipe organ reverberated throughout the metal hull of the Nautilus. Captain Nemo's sour mood was made obvious to all. His submersible ship lay sunk on the ocean floor, wounded by a Kraken attack. They had been so close to finding the lost city of Atlantis! It was frustrating. But Captain Nemo could not be so easily defeated. They would make the necessary repairs and be underway on the hunt in less than a week. 

Dive! Dive! Dive!  Last call for the fun underwater steampunk round of Aengima. This image is of course a little homage to the 2000 Leagues Under the Sea. I was inspired by so many great items. The beautiful La Malvada Muder tattoo is lovely and full of interesting water themed elements. The Hat is by KiB designer, and Eyepath and Goatee by Badwolf. From Graveyard is the walking cane. And from Static are the whimsical animesh  Nightmariner Lanterns. They are so fun to watch, but also come in a hold version and static props.

Wizarding Faire 2020: The Substitute Teacher

STORYLINE: The class had been murmuring. The Professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts was late. He was never late. Did something bad happen to him? Speculation was rampant until a dramatic kick to open the door made them all spin in their seats towards someone they had never seen before. She had wild disheveled hair, and a spiteful glare. " 'ello Dearies. Care to learn 'ow to not get owned in a duel like Professor Musty Pants?" Fennimore's jaw dropped. Was she a substitute teacher, ....or the reason the professor was missing?

The Wizarding Faire is ending soon. This post was inspired by the Dueling Skybox by Pitaya, the Dueling Wand and hud system by Nishi, dueling pose by Lulustuff, and the Artemis Dress by Altair.  I imagined someone like Bellatrix LeStrange teaching Dueling. Wizarding Faire 2020: First Day of School

STORYLINE: Fennimore's parents told him he had to take his little cousin Willow with him to Hogwarts. She was shy and worried about getting lost in the train station. When he didn't offer his hand for her to hold, she held onto his shirt tail instead. "I'm going to be in Ravenclaw too, Fenny!" she shouted over the busy noise. "We can have lunch and dinner together everyday!" But he could hardly stay mad at her. When he disappeared into the wall at platform 9 3/4, she gasped. Her eyes shone brightly. It reminded him of his first time going to Hogwarts. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to help her out.

Wizarding Faire is so full of good stuff to inspire, it can be hard to pick a theme! The First Day of School was inspired by the Luggage carts from Sari-Sari and the animesh Howler letter from Guhit x Salemi. Willow's outfit from the Ersch Harriet Gacha, and necklace by Oxide. Aengima: Dreadful Depths: Reach of the Octopus

STORYLINE: Hidden in the dark, a dangerous stealthy predator waited, his many tentacles coiled ready to snatch his prey out of the open ocean. He was about to take down a Great White Shark that dared to stray into his territory when suddenly a school of tiny female Dumbo Octopus surrounded him. He waved his arms to shoo them away, but the girls seemed to be quite smitten with him, latching on him with their tiny cute little arms. But one of them was too nervous and accidentally inked. She was so embarrassed she hid in his coils.

Night of the Tentacle! This post was inspired by the animesh Tentacle prosthetics by Clover at the Mainframe event, and the many goodies at Aengima: Dreadful Depths. The tentacle themed tattoo is by Lilthe. The bubbles and adorable Dumbo Octopus is by Naminoke. From Gorsimi is the face makeup and tentacle necklace. Wizarding Faire 2020: Ambush at the Gamekeepers Lair

STORYLINE: Hagrid was awoken by a sudden freak chill in the summer night air. He was grabbing his thickest blanket when he heard a loud bang in the other room followed by the startled squawks of the baby hippogriffs. "Off! Off! Get off me!" The home invader was none other than sixth year student Fennimore who was busy waving his wand wildly. "Hagrid! HAGRID! Help me!" Fennimore was firing off ill-thought spells in an attempt to loosen the grip of the snake coiled tight around him. "Easy now. Don' yeh worry, Fenny. Once ye stop all that yippin', she'll relax. She's more scared then yew, and twice as cold."

The Wizarding Faire is back! Grab your brooms, don your house colors and race down to Mischief Managed to see all the wonderful creations. Hooray! This post was inspired by Second Spaces' Game Keeper Clutter, and these two wonderful creatures, the pygmy hippogriff by banana peel, and wearable animesh ohcami by Clover.

I just love this event and Mischief Managed. Its one of the best roleplay sims in SL. The details with so many rooms, areas, places, and mysteries and secret passages... its just a dream. You could spend days just exploring it. The role players are all great people with a passion for the story. So many good times are had, and players progress through the school years, and some become teachers themselves. They recently expanded and added a 2nd sim. Aengima: Dreadful Depths: The Crab Guardian

STORYLINE: Down below the murky depths, where only glints of sunlight reach, lay a secret. It had been hidden from human eyes for ten millennia. The sunken capital of the Merfolk, Atlantis. But times were changing. Humans now had contraptions for exploring underwater. And one particular human, Captain Nemo of the Nautilus, was a real headache for Nectes, the Crab guardian of the city. No matter what diversion, or camouflage he used, the Nautilus was on the hunt for treasure like a shark smelling blood in the water. "What's a crab to do?" he sighed. Then an idea hit him, -- a boobytrap! He happened to have a rather nasty little baby kraken. It was perfect. The humans would never bother them again!

Aengima's current round is the Dreadful Depths, underwater steampunk. It brings to my mind tales like 2000 Leagues Under the Sea. As a kid, it was one of my favorite rides at Disney World. So the inspiration for this image is an old Disney ride, and cool things from Aengima like the Cinphul's crustacean-like armor. The armor comes in 4 different texture varieties, male and female, with legs unrigged, and rigged for popular mesh bodies. The treasure chest with a nasty surprise is by Guhit.  And the merfolk tattoo is by Lilthum.

STORYLINE:  BUZZ ....  BUZZ ....  I'm detecting a strange anomaly in the Matrix.  Error 404.  Program shutting down.  Begin system maintenance.  ....  Diagnostics report: a Bug in the system. WASP ID1014.

I love me some Cyber. If you are like me, you are going to get your Cyber Fix at the current round of Mainframe. Its stuffed full of badass stuff. This image was inspired by the creepy WASP wings and Antennae by Haro. The wings come in either Bento or Animesh. They are animated and have a nasty Wasp buzz noise that makes me jump every time I hear it. The matching Anennae are a gift, and both WASP items come with a hud to change textures. Also at Mainframe is the KMH CP004 hair that works nicely for men and women. The Cyber sword is from the gacha by Jeys. The amazing background is motherboard wall by Strange Merchant. I'm wearing the Graves bodysuit, its made for girls, but really if you cover the upper torso, it will work just fine. I love Graves outfits, they are so handy for layering. The top I'm wearing is a sweet gift I picked up at SL17B by ZED. The mask is by A&Y.  And yes, I know. I know... It's driving me crazy too, the nose is showing! But hey, Mr WASP is not doing safe pandemic mask wearing ok, he's a bug.

Its the end of the world.... This mix of Apocalypse demon and nuclear bomb worship was inspired by inZoxi's warhead throne, the very cool looking Lilithe tattoos, and Static Goetia gacha hoods at Aenigma's Post Apocalyptic event.

Engine Room: Commodore of the Skies

STORYLINE: The frontier towns floating in the lawless skies of Venus were full of scavengers, ruffians, and pirates. But that all changed when the Commodore arrived. He was determined to make it safe for the pioneers.

These are the last days of round two of the Engine Room. Be sure to head over and scoop up some badass Steampunk goodies. Shown above is the Commanders coat by Salem. It comes in several base colors. The Gasmask is by The Forge. It comes in black and brown, unrigged and mod so you can adjust it for a good fit. The gun is by Reliquary and comes with a hud to draw, fire, and holster. It has optional textures you load into it. You can also buy a shell caddy for your gun. In the background is the Irongate Wharf by Ex Machina. Its meant for the water, but hey, it can fly too if you give some propellers. lol  Other items I used, The Blackjack rare Airship, and past LindenLab premium gift the Marauder. Gloves, pants, and boots are by Contraption. And adding a little movement is the Cureless Senshi cloth from gacha.

Fantasy Faire 2020: The Severed Garden

The Fantasy Faire was a huge success this year, lots of fun was had by all and $73,572 USD was raised for Relay for Life. Congrats to 700+ Faire staff and designers who helped make this happen, and to all the Faireland visitors who enjoyed and donated. Well done!

Several elements from both the Engine Room and Fantasy Faire inspired this post. From the Engine Room is the Lux Hair from Raven Bell. It comes in multiple fits for men and women. The from and the back are separate, so you can combine hairs or color then separately. Included is a unrigged bow with its own texture hud. Matching up nicely with the hair is the Auxentios Pass version of the Atreus coat by Contraption, which was a Relay for Life item at the Fantasy Faire. The textures for it a wonderful, you can pick out what colors you want for different fabrics from the texture hud. From the Fantasy Faire is this wonderful garden by The Looking Glass. Fantasy Faire 2020: Auxentios Pass: War of the Worlds

STORYLINE: Above the endless mechanical heartbeat of Auxentio's Pass the sirens began to wail. The city was under attack! Detective Moth cursed under his breath. Of all the rotten days to be assigned undercover in the Red Light district...  Suddenly a trumpeting blast a shook the ground. Snow and ice on the roofs above him suddenly gave way. He quickly jumped back to the facade of his favorite hangout in this frozen hellhole, Ye Olde Cigar Shop. A deadly falling ice spear missed him by mere inches. It would be been an impressive display of agility if he had not also slipped in his high heeled boots and fell on top a hot steampipe. He cried out in pain. More bad luck, and this time it was attracting the wrong kind of attention. The ground trembled under the heavy stomp of a towering behemoth as it rounded the corner of the brownstones. It aimed directly at him. "Shit!" No time to run. The Moth quickly jumped up, his mechanical wings straining under the demand. Up! Up! An angry blast of wrath shot out where he once was. ...Ha! missed him. The lumbering machine's armor was impressive, but from above, The Moth spied what must be a vulnerable spot. A smirk curled up around his cigar. Maybe it was his lucky day after all....

And in an explosion of cool happening at the same time, is the Engine Room. The Pathos skirt and top by Toksik are really interesting. The top has fits for men, women, and even v-tech. Love it! Of course I had to try to see if I could come up with an interesting character for this outfit. Also from the Engine Room is the wonderfully textured Staff by Sempiternal. It has several different hand pose positions (men & women, left or right, and 2 hands). The intricately detailed monocle by Air comes in left or right, gold or silver. And rounding out the outfit are the impossibly high and impossibly steamy steampunk boots by Eudora.

In other news, if you have been watching the blogs, you might have heard both Genus Lab and Catwa released a gift head this week. Genus Lab is fighting a DMCA now, but I expect they will be back up and running soon. The Strong Face 001 gift head is wonderfully made. I'll cover the Freya Catwa head soon, it has neck fits for male and female. TMP Classic body is back for 1L, and if you slap the board for Lucy body, you might win that too. Its been a fantastic week for the alts and those New to SL to get up to speed on mesh heads and bodies. Excellent.
