Engine Room: Murder at the Cabaret, 2

STORYLINE: Giselle hovered above her own body, limbs sprawled across the dressing room floor like a broken marionette. A single black feather from her headpiece drifted down, catching in a pool of spilled perfume, while downstairs, Le Rouge Noir pulsed on with its gilded glamor and champagne lies, unmoved by her absence. Now a ghost, translucent and shimmering in the haze of cigarette smoke, Giselle watched *her.*

Lady Dupree. 

That woman.... No, that *man* in disguise, her nemesis in satin gloves and fake eyelashes. They had fought for everything: applause, attention, the gold-ringed fingers of rich fools in velvet booths. The very name curled on Giselle’s ghostly tongue like bitter wine. That man, that fraud, had been her competition for nearly a decade. Always twirling in finer silks, always stealing glances from sugar daddies too drunk to care that “The Lady" was no lady at all. Every flirt, every wink, every applause had felt like a dagger between Giselle’s ribs.

So it made sense, didn’t it? That *he* would be the one to slip something in her drink. That *he* would finally outdo her... permanently.

But now… 

Now Lady Dupree was slumped over her cooling body, weeping into a handkerchief soaked in stage powder and tears, black eyeliner dripping like ink down her porcelain-painted cheeks. Her impeccable glamor crumbled. Her cries were raw, gasping. Not for attention. Not for performance. Dupree was clutching a tiny secret treasure, a locket with Giselle’s picture inside. 

Suddenly, her ghostly heart was snagged by something unexpected, -- guilt. 

She’s faking it, Giselle thought. She has to be. 

And yet, no one else wept. Not the dancers in their feathers and fake diamonds. Not the barkeep polishing glasses like souls weren’t slipping through the cracks. Not even René, the club owner with a heart made of debts and cigars. He’d only looked at the body once, grunted, and barked orders. 

“Put Lady onstage,” he said with all the empathy of a cash register. “She’s on in five.”

Even as The Lady clutched the hem of her sequined corset, begging for mercy, the stagehands dragged her into the wings. The spotlight did not wait for grief. 

Giselle shivered though no cold could touch her now, the club roared with drunken laughter, the clink of glasses, the soft growl of a jazz saxophone. The Master of Ceremony’s sinister voice echoed in her head: 

"Three days, darling, to find who ended your curtain call."

She glanced down where her body had fallen and back at Dupree, now center stage beneath the cruel glare of gold. Her sobs had quieted. Her eyes were empty, her makeup smeared.

The band began to play the music of what had been Giselle's act as if her death wasn’t a tragedy, just a messy inconvenience. 

Wow this was a complex challenge, I hope you all liked it. Lady Dupress was inspired by the Red Wine Burlesque set that includes fits for men. The bustle comes in rigged or unrigged, and the textures include many cool PBR textures including sequins.   ...The Lady's stage persona includes elements of both the bride and groom with the Stovepipe Hat and Wedding Veil by Grasshopper ST. Both come with texture huds. The Wedding Veil also comes with linked rigged or individual veils and individual unrigged options. Lace can be blend or mask ... The loose pulled back hairstyle into a braid is by Ginko Hair for girls and guys. (I love the white to black texture!)  ...And another win for fashionable gents and gals are the Pendle Boots by Seydr. There a several texture hud styles stuffed with color and lace options.  ...I combined the choker of Red Wine with the Random Matter's teardrop Xavia choker. It's unrigged and has texture options. ...The soulful eyes are Kairos Eyes by Mana with cat pupil and nice little glints.   ...The stage makeup Georgiana is by Eyecing. It includes several separate or combined makeup layers for white face paint, rouge, and moles in several key places.  Matching the damask pattern of the Red Wine corset are the BOM gloves by Miamai and stocking by Violent Seduction.  ...This stunning club setting is The Night Car Backdrop by FNY Designs, and Moon swing and poses by Fox City.

STORYLINE: The class had been murmuring. The Professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts was late. He was never late. Did something bad happen to him? Speculation was rampant until a dramatic kick to open the door made them all spin in their seats towards someone they had never seen before. She had wild disheveled hair, and a spiteful glare. " 'ello Dearies. Care to learn 'ow to not get owned in a duel like Professor Musty Pants?" Fennimore's jaw dropped. Was she a substitute teacher, ....or the reason the professor was missing?

The Wizarding Faire is ending soon. This post was inspired by the Dueling Skybox by Pitaya, the Dueling Wand and hud system by Nishi, dueling pose by Lulustuff, and the Artemis Dress by Altair.  I imagined someone like Bellatrix LeStrange teaching Dueling. Aenigma (Madness) : Off with their heads!

STORYLINE: The Prince of Hearts was furious with his mother. The Queen never listened to him. He warned her there was a swarm of Jabberwocks coming to infest Wonderland. He offered simple solutions to deal with the problem, but she refused to listen to him. She cared more about her popularity with the card soldiers, or how many heart-shaped rubies she amassed. He accused her in front of the entire court of being blind. For his crime, she had his left eye plucked out. In a fit of madness, he took out his wrath on her prized roses.

I know these times are tough during the pandemic for everyone. It seems odd to return into SL and try to refocus, but here you go! The image above is inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the Shears, and Rose Blindfold at Aenigma (Madness). I used the Animesh shears by Maru Kado. They can be worn to trigger the animation, or used as a prop. It has singles poses and multiple texture options. Matching the shears, is a scraps tattoo texture by The White Crow for face and body, in light and dark, and also lips only. The Blindfold is the next of Silvery K's Cursed Rose line. You can buy it several headband colors, and each comes with a hud to change the textures of vine, rose, and metal.

The Immortal 500: The Dominion of Team Nightrik

STORYLINE: The increased enthusiasm for this year's race made no difference to team Nightrik. The brother and sister team ruled supreme over the Immortal 500 and no ambitious punk was going knock them off their throne. They had talent. They had cyborg implants and years of game simulations. And if all that failed, they had their secret stash of Noble Blood charged Nightrik fuel and mutant pet sabotagers.

Nightrik Nos is wearing the badass Viking Hair mohawk by Tableau Vivant. You can pick it up at the Fantasy Collective. The rigged Viking Hair has a long braid in the back with ties in the back color change. From Level Up are the fun goggles by Violent Seduction. You can get then in 14 different colors. They come with a hud to change the metal and texture of the lens. The anime style armwarmers by Cubic Cherry come in sizes large and small, and 8 different colors. On my shoulder, looking like an evil Pikachu, is Sunderblast from the Monster Slayer gacha. He looks so mischief, love it! The nails are Wicked Peach Checkered. Over at We <3 Role Play, you can pick up the cool Cyber Wrench by YumYums on sale. It comes in version for the belt or the hand with a trigger animation. If this makeup reminds you think of Labyrinth, you're right! I picked it up at Serafilms last month. You can pick it up at the Bubble mainstore. Under the eyes is the Sleepless makeup by Clemmm currently on sale at Tengoku Rakuen Furimaketto. The white nylon vest, shirt and shorts I picked up during Grasp's 4 anniversary. Before I answer the Meme questions, I want to point out two great items for guys and girls at Dark Style Fair. The event ends June 7th so hurry over to pick up the goodies! The Compass Tech Muffler I am wearing from Contraption fits in a wonderfully mysterious way. It's perfect to hide behind when you've been sloppy in your feeding habits. Boowahahahaha. Little Lolita is modeling the fitted mesh Bat Corset from Violent Seduction. The corset has cute bat bows in the front and back. It comes in black, blue, candy, green, ice, lavender, leaf, mint, peach, purple, red, teal, or white and each color has it's own complete color change hud.

Each time Berry's What's your Digits Meme comes around I take the time to reevaluate my shapes. It's a good exercise to do, especially for tweaking proportions. This Meme helped create the standard sizes thanks to Wisdom of the Crowd averaging. Using the standards eliminated the quirks in my shapes mostly for the better, while I still maintain my ideal Bishonen proportions. ...Now I have a confession to make. I switch shape and even tweak shape for clothing, or pose, on almost every image I do. My digits can vary greatly so it doesn't make sense to list my digits ranges. But I can say this, my main avatar above, which I wear when I am not blogging, uses a standard size medium and clocks in between 7' 8" (234 cm) and 8' (244 cm). For the girls shown on the blog, I've taken over that duty from Fulli. She might be back in the future, but for now I'm carrying the load. My girl shapes are all over the map too as I hunt for the right tone. I'm still trying to find my way around the girl dials. lol Little Lolita above is becoming one of my favorites. She wears a size extra small and stands without heels at 6' 4" (193 cm). ...yeah, maybe not so little Lolita. lol  Just for comparison, here is what my guy and girl avatars looked like back in May of 2012.

Have you tried any of the new fitted mesh avatars released by Linden Lab? What do you think of them? What are your thoughts about Fitted mesh?

Yes, all the vampires series ones! They are fun, nicely made, and a joy to clown around in. The normal series avatars however are harder to love because the faces don't have expressions, or have eyes that blink and move. It puts me in the Uncanny Valley and it feels like wearing a costume rather than inhabiting an avatar. The vampire series doesn't have that problem because they aren't trying to be realistic, they are costumes.  Fitted mesh clothing is great when it's well crafted. It makes it possible to convert girl clothes to femboy on the female base (that means no breasts or wide hips, and broader shoulders). This is a tomboy shape with fitted mesh I did here.

1. Have you tried any fitted mesh avatars/bodies created by residents?

Yes. I tried the demos for 3rd party fitted mesh for girls. The WowMeh had been the front runner for the ladies, but it's currently being reviewed by Linden Labs and not for sale. The Fitted Mesh Body Warz are just beginning too, Slink and Belleza girls are rumored to be in development right now. Of all the currently released fitted mesh girl shapes, the one I like the best is Chip Midnight's CMFF girl. It's not a fetish shape, it's Girl Next Door, and it wears existing hair and mesh in standard sizes. You can choose to wear the head or not, and use premade alphas, or create your own with his applier app. Basically, it's built to be modded. It aims to eliminate the need for slink attachments. The feet work with a rotation for the different heel heights. And the good news is Chip will be releasing a fitted male avatar at some point. I'm sure it will come after most the bugs and issues are worked out on the female first. As far as fitted mesh for the guys, that's the only one I know of in development. There a several male mesh bodies, but they are currently not fitted mesh. p.s Utilizator's Kemono has just released, it's not fitted mesh but selling like hotcakes. It has a neko twist to his anime girl Avatar2 shape and M3 Head.

2. Have you tried a mesh head? What are your thoughts about mesh heads?

Yes. Because I don't think of any girl shapes as "me' I'm not bothered at all by wearing a female mesh head. I got the Slink Becky head for the expressions but I have a few problems with it. 1) I need an option either add an alpha to the eyelashes or turn them off for photography. It's brilliant the eyelashes can blink but also means the lashes need to be solid for mesh switching animation. Those solid mesh eyelashes tend to photograph poorly, so photo only option to hide them or add an alpha to them would be great. 2) The ear hole is too large. I would love to have mesh head without ears or holes where the ears were when I add a mesh ear attachment. 3) The teeth are beautiful but really darkly textured. 4) Emma won on the mesh head contest and most appliers work for her instead of Becky. So the Becky have tends to have the eyebrows too high for her face which creates a startled look. ...  I would love to see more expressive mesh heads. That's a key selling point to me. ... My favorite mesh head for girls is Nea by SnowRabbit. I just love seeing this pretty face inworld, in the blogs, or on flickr. It's brilliantly made and lifelike. She randomly smiles and blinks. There is zero Uncanny Valley about her. The only trade off is you lose your identify when you use a mesh head. You will look exactly like any other person using it. But there is another mesh head that DOES have slider adjustments! It's the new mesh head by Yabusaka. You adjust the sliders in an app, then have your custom mesh head uploaded to SL. You can play with Mesh Studio Head demo here. The new male demo version is here. As far as a mesh head for guys, my favorite by far is DollCoco Male. He doesn't have expressions but he's so nicely made. With some tweaks you can wear your own eyes with him, or even your own shape, but I recommend keeping your shape skinny to better match the head. My main avatar's old skin also matches DollCoco male perfectly.

3. Do you foresee a lot of changes to our current Second Life avatars because of fitted mesh?

Yes. We will eventually make the switch to amazingly well made fitted mesh avatars. Perhaps as soon as a year from now they will be the new standard in SL. Why? Because they are nicer looking, and it will make posing and photography so much better. But when it comes to mesh heads, people will be resistant because it's takes away their individuality. So that brings us right back to the serious need for Linden Labs to update the default avatar, because it's the only one with facial sliders and emotions. We can replace everything else with fitted mesh, but not the head. Really, it could be as simple as just converting the head to higher resolution quads, removing as many triangle poles as possible, and making new morphs for the sliders (that includes less cartoony emotes), and keeping the UV maps the same.

STORYLINE: I do not know her name, nor how she looked, but she has been my only companion throughout the long years. The first time she came to me, she threw me from the tower into the river below. When I did not drown, she set me on fire. When the flames failed to destroy me, she buried me deep in the earth. However, I was not there for long. She dug me up, her silence somehow colder than the air around us. Then she finally spoke, "You are reborn. You are MY daughter now." After that she was much kinder to me. She delighted in dressing me up and brushing my hair while she hummed a lullaby. I was never able to talk to her, but I think she knew I was listening. Perhaps she liked it that I never spoke, never told her I thought she was cruel. She seemed to grow more and more attached to me. She even told me a sad tale of how she deeply loved a man, but he broke her heart and married someone else. When the day came that I felt change was near, she leaned down to me and whispered, "It was I who did this to you. Forgive me." She kissed me on the cheek and breathed, "forget." I opened my eyes as I heard the sound of a heavy wooden door breaking. I saw the blurry form of man in red charge charge at dark female figure. His sword sunk deep into her chest. She did not cry out, or resist. She turned into a shower of green ash and finally my long nightmare was over. The man lifted me up, for I was too weak to raise myself. "Are you alright, miss?"

I LOVE the Kalopsia dragon throne, it's super cool. It comes a few female sits, cobwebs, and broken columns. In the background amoung the thrones is the Sleeping Beauty castle set decoration piece. The headress by  Kalopsia comes in white or black and it's the stamp prize! Wonderful! You can pick up this cool Thorn hairstyle at the Violent Seduction store. It comes is many colors, I used the teal. Violent Seduction's stamp prize is a lingerie outfit with mesh corset and system layers. It also comes with appliers for slink feet, phat/cuteazz, and wowmeh. This lovely shade of green skin is the stamp prize by The Sugar Garden and it comes every applier imaginable! Veil Horns Maleficent is wearing is by the Sugar Garden. The wild striped boots are by Aftershok and availible at World Goth Fair, as well as the Midnight Eyes by Snow. World Goth Fair ends June 1st, so there is still some time to shop up up some clothes your lovely Maleficent. It's been a hell of month.  See you guys in June. ^^/

Gothmas: The Black Poinsettia

STORYLINE: Every year at 3 am, a dance hall performer known as the Red Poinsettia gives a free performance for all the lost and desolate on Christmas Eve. Some say it was at 3 am on Christmas Eve her husband-to-be was murdered, but no one really knows what turned the Red Poinsettia black.

Lots of great goodies at Gothmas for the ladies. This outfit was inspired by the black poinsettia shoes by Spyralle, and the hair which is a current NWSH hunt gift from Calico. The hair comes a headdress and color change hud. Giving a bit of burlesque is the amazingly versatile Criminal outfit by Violent Seduction that can be either prim and proper, or down-right, umm..., criminal. You can mix and match styles and it also comes with appliers. Burlesque poses are by Theater Chain, I included a mini preview of each one. RMK Halloween: Nosferatu

STORYLINE: As you walk through RMK Gothic on your way to buy items for a Halloween party, you begin to feel something is not quite right. Trick-or-Trickers wandering the sim have very convincing Halloween costumes. You wonder if those are really costumes, and that vampire looking couple..., they aren't really drinking blood, right?

RMK Halloween has begun! Your challenge in the newest RMK quest game is to make right sweet treat for the right ghost. Ingredients to cook rain down from the sky. Try to combine three of them to create a dessert. Once you have successfully baked a treat, find the ghost that loves your cooking, (even if you made toxic candy!) Stumped? Ask the pumpkins, ghosts, and skulls around the sim for clues. Sometimes they drop hints, other times they say funny things. Your efforts will be richly rewarded with tickets you can exchange for excellent prizes from 23 designers from RMK Gothic! Pictured above on her is the very cool RMK Halloween hunt prize by Violent Seduction. It includes cute bat wing decorations on the collar, bodice, waist, and skirt. Both vampires are wearing the new horns headdress from the RokumeikaN gacha. The rare prize is a complete outfit of Sweet / Fairy Lolita Unicorn in pink with unicorn headdress and matching bonnet! I'm wearing the RMK Halloween hunt prize by KU. It comes with two kinds of collar, the pendant version like I am wearing above, and a large bowtie version.
