Salvage Station / Cyber Fair: Something Beautiful Survives (Escape from Club Apophis, 43)

STORYLINE: Cold mud pressed against Echo’s cheek.

For a long, disoriented moment, she didn’t know where she was. The air tasted of rust, wet ash, and the heavy, metallic tang of unwashed bodies. Her upper torso felt like it was on fire, a rhythmic, white-hot throb pulsing right against her collarbone.

She rolled over with a choked groan, looking up through blurred vision at towering, gunmetal-gray walls that swallowed the sky. Massive iron bars bisected the gloom.

The Pen.

She sat up too fast and regretted it immediately. Blinking away the sting of ash, she scanned the nearest clusters of captives, looking for any familiar face from Jae Won University. Row after row of hollow, unfamiliar faces looked back at her or looked away entirely.

The reality of it slammed into her, bringing the memory rushing back in a terrifying, jagged flash.

The heavy, calloused fist of the Dokkaebi Guard twisting into her hair. The brutal drag across the slippery marble floor of the clinic. The way she had clawed at the ground, her oversized jacket tearing, screaming that she didn't know where the other six escapees were. And then, the forge. The guard lifting the heavy iron rod, its tip glowing a blinding, angry orange with the insignia of Monstrum. The searing stench of her own flesh. The scream that had died in her throat before the blackness took her.

Echo curled into a tight ball in the dirt, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. She clutched her hands over her ears, trying to shut out the low, miserable hum of the cursed energy barrier and the shuffle of a hundred captive humans awaiting their doom.

She was the only one who had been caught.

The self-loathing hit her worse than the physical pain. The moral center? The one who always insisted on doing the right thing? What a fool.

She was the one who had pleaded with the group not to abandon Jihoon after he caught fire two months ago. Her sentimentality had dragged them all into this. She had frozen when the Nuns attacked. Bit her lip when scared, her blood giving away their hiding spot. Not once. Twice.

Worse, she had coaxed the Black Snakeskin Box's core into containment. Played PONG with it. Treated it like misunderstood tech. Instead of what it truly was.

A fragment of Apophis.

She had literally befriended a demon because she couldn't stand the thought of something being lonely.

Liability.

The word echoed through her skull. Everyone would have been safer without her.

She shook her head hard enough to hurt. No more thoughts. Just hands.

Echo’s hands instinctively began to move through the mud. She picked up a strip of frayed copper wire. A cracked, dead circuit board. A rusted washer. Sitting cross-legged, she began to fit the pieces together, forcing order onto the chaos, building a tiny, fragile junk garden in the filth.

A necklace of bottle caps. A tree decorated with glass bottles. Tiny robots of scrap metal.

A small shadow fell over her hands.

"That mark," the child pointed. "I've never seen one like that. No one else has a mark like that. Are you special?"

Echo flinched, pulling her collar up to hide the raw, blistered brand. A little girl in an oversized, grime-streaked shirt was looking down at her, her eyes wide with a strange kind of reverence.

"It's ugly," Echo whispered, her voice cracking.

The child sat down cross-legged right across from her, staring at her brand. "You look healthy. You escaped, didn't you? That's why you got that special mark. You're dangerous."

Echo laughed bitterly. "I'm not dangerous if I was recaptured."

The girl jumped to her feet, her eyes shining. "I knew it! You escaped!"

"I'm not a hero," Echo choked out, fresh tears tracking through the grime on her cheeks. "I'm a failure. I'm alone. None of the others got caught."

The child didn't look dissuaded. Instead, she reached out and gently guided Echo's own hand to cup the air around her neck, shielding the burn. "The brand pain fades after a day if you don't touch it. Don't let the air hit it straight on."

Echo blinked through her tears. The world was upside down. She had dreamed of being the one to rescue the people of The Pen, and here a ragged child was teaching her how to survive.

"Watch the Enforcers on the north wall," the girl whispered, pointing with her chin. "The ones with the red armbands do the same route every hour. Stay away from the center courtyard after dark." Then, the child looked at the tiny toy robot in Echo's lap. "My mom has moldy bread. I'll trade it for your robot."

"Moldy bread?"

The girl nodded. "It helps wounds."

"Oh! I get it," Echo brightened. "Is that The Pen's version of Penicillin?"

"Pen a what?" The girl grew bored, her eyes searching Echo's collection of junk. "Have you seen a teddy bear around here? I lost him before they moved me out of this block."

Echo froze. The robot in her hand rolled out.

Teddy.

The dirt-stained, lonely bear she had found half-buried in the mud a day ago. The one that had broken her heart.

"You're... you're his owner?" Echo whispered. Her chest heaved as she pulled the little girl into a sudden, tight hug. "Thank God you're alive."

"You found him?" the girl asked softly against her shoulder.

Echo pulled back, gripping the girl's small shoulders, her determination flaring back to life. "Yes, I did. Teddy is on a very special mission. He's escaping The Pen. He's carrying proof of what's happening inside this place. He's going to tell the outside world we're trapped. Teddy is going to save us all. Help is coming."

Hot tears of relief cut fresh tracks down Echo's face.

A woman stepped forward from the shadow of a nearby shipping container home, having watched them warily from the gloom. Her eyes were wide with a sudden, electrifying hope. "Is that true? You know a way out?"

Echo nodded. “The vampires can't cross water. Teddy is our message in a bottle, sealed with proof of what's happening in here, sent to the outside world.”

A discarded, bones-bare radio sitting on a nearby crate crackled. For half a second, a girl's voice whispered through the static. Then silence. A loose copper washer on the ground rattled, sliding an inch closer to Echo's boot entirely on its own.

Echo barely registered it, assuming her mind was finally fracturing under the trauma.

The mother didn't notice it either. She was focused on Echo's brand, then at the carefully arranged junk garden, and finally at her daughter. She gave a quiet, respectful nod.

"Come with me," the mother said softly, her posture shifting from wary to protective. "There is someone you need to meet."

Echo stood up, her hand still cupped over her burning collarbone. As she followed them through the crowd, a ripple went through the tents. The story of the teddy bear whispered from prisoner to prisoner.

Behind them in the dirt, the toy robot's eyes glowed white. It turned its head and watched them move away.

The mother led her deep into the ruins of a collapsed administrative building. She pushed a heavy desk aside and rolled up a dusty Persian rug, revealing a hidden hatch. The smell of mildew and old paper drifted up from the darkness beneath. She knocked on the metal with a rhythm that sounded like Morse Code.

They waited.

Then the hatch groaned open.

"You need to meet our leader. The one who keeps us organized," the mother whispered, stepping aside. "The one who puts the pieces together. Tell him about the bear."

Echo climbed down into a shadowed room as the mother covered the hatch once more.

The ever-present hum of the cursed energy barrier disappeared. It was a hidden Safe Zone, right inside The Pen.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, her heart stopped.

Sitting at a makeshift desk covered in hand-drawn maps of the underground tunnels was the leader of the resistance. The Ice Cream Man mask hanging on the wall behind him.

She recognized the mask. Her throat tightened.

He looked up, his eyes meeting hers. There was no surprise in his gaze, only the calm, calculated look of a chess master whose missing piece had finally landed on the board. The Guardian of the Barrier.

Hwan.

He closed his ledger. "Welcome to the real fight, Echo. Now what is this rumor about a teddy bear?"

Salvage Station: The Underworld (Escape from Club Apophis, 27)

STORYLINE: They were trapped. Trapped in the pitch-black catacombs beneath the Forbidden Zone, with a creature that shouldn't exist. It had slipped through the sewer grate above, a thing of tattered cloth, scraping metal, and impossible, hungry light. The team had followed the Saja's rule, don't move, don't look. But it was too late. The Sister was in the tunnel with them, and it could smell their fear.

The swirling vortex of its face flared, searching the dark, hungry and close, vibrating the stone like a cracking bone.

Echo pressed her back to the tunnel wall, her breath hitching. Don’t look. Don’t look. She bit her lip. One sharp sting. One copper-scented drop. The air seemed to gasp in reply, as if the tunnel itself could smell it. The Nun’s head snapped toward her. It could smell the blood. It lunged.

Echo flinched. She looked up and screamed.

The Nun's face spit open like a cursed flower. A burst of light shot out of it, locking onto Echo's eyes. It was going to feed.

“NO!”

Ghost moved, a black-clad blur. He lunged past Echo, knife flashing, a perfect, lethal thrust aimed at the creature’s center mass. The blade went through. Hit nothing. No body, no bone, just empty robes and a sudden, violent chill that flash-froze his glove.

The Nun, a thing of cloth and hungry void, swatted him aside like a fly.

Ghost slammed into the wall. The small hand-crank generator on his belt dug into his hip.

The generator.

The Nun loomed over Echo, its vortex spinning faster, drawing her in.

Ghost didn't have time. He ripped the generator free and, with a snarl, wound the handle once.

A loud, grinding GGRRIIIND shrieked through the tunnel, obscenely loud, vibrating with raw, stupid power.

The Nun reared back. It shrieked, a sound of conflict, torn between the smell of fresh blood and the taste of pure, crackling energy.

Ghost made the choice for it. He hurled the generator with all his strength down the opposite tunnel. "GO!" he signed in the air, a useless, frantic gesture in the dark.

The generator clattered against stone, its tiny light flickering.

The Nun forgot Echo. It forgot them all. With a final, ravenous howl, it chased the power, tattered cloth and shadow vanishing into the black.

Silence collapsed around them, broken only by Echo’s hyperventilating sobs.

Hwan’s voice cut through, cold and urgent.

"Get up. Form a chain. Hold on. Do not let go. And run."

They scrambled in total darkness, a chaos of limbs, boots, and breath.

“I can’t see!” Plague yelled.

“No one can!” Minjo shouted back.

Ghost ignored the chain. He scooped up the trembling Echo and took the rear, covering their escape.

They ran blind, a stumbling mess through the darkness.

Minjo's foot caught on a loose stone, and she went down hard, breaking the chain.

"Minjo!" Plague stopped short. “I got you!”

He fumbled in the black, reaching. His hand landed on....

"Minjo, I'm so sor—"

SMACK.

"Just get off me!" she hissed.

“Okay, okay!” He grabbed again, wrong again.

“Plague,” Minjo said, voice lethal. “That is not my arm.”

"FINE!" Plague dropped to all fours. "Piggyback. Now! Let's go!"

Minjo, swallowing her pride, scrambled onto his back.

“RUN!” Hwan’s voice echoed ahead.

They raced deeper, lower. Then, the air changed. Cold stone gave way to a warm, humid sweetness that clung to their tongues.

They burst into a cavern. And it wasn’t dark. It glowed.

A vast, impossible garden sprawled before them, phosphorescent fungi rising like pillars, glowing moss draped from stalactites like drowned willows, and long gelatinous tendrils hanging from the ceiling, pulsing faintly with internal light. A cracked bioreactor tank sat half-buried in the cavern floor. Its shattered glass leaked viscous cyan fluid that streamed into the soil, feeding the luminous vegetation. The entire chamber hummed softly, like the heartbeat of something enormous sleeping under the earth. The air shimmered with drifting spores, each one pulsing like a tiny glowing seed.

“Is this… the surface?” Echo whispered.

“No,” Hwan said. He stood by a rusted miner’s railway, his face pale. “Do not stop,” he ordered. “Do not touch anything. This is MasterGin’s garden. His… nursery.”

“Nursery?” Plague panted, legs burning under Minjo’s weight.

“For parasites,” Hwan said. “We saved a man from here once. When we pulled him out...," his breath caught, “…he looked like a jellyfish shaped like a man.” He swallowed. “He was still screaming.”

SPLASH.

The surface of the leakage pool broke.

Something rose from the neon sludge. It was translucent, dripping, and pulsing with soft, sickly light. It looked like a man, but the skin was a clear membrane, revealing organs that floated in gel and bones that had softened into cartilage.

It had no face, only a vibrating film where a mouth should be.

“Oh god,” Plague choked out.

The Jellyfish Man shrieked, a wet, gurgling sound and lunged. A whip-fast tentacle of dissolving flesh lashed out toward Minjo.

“Move!”

Hwan stepped in front of them. He didn't raise a shield. He raised the hammer. Vanilla. The worn mallet he'd carried as the Ice Cream Man.

But as he swung, the air warped.

The metal underneath groaned and expanded, thickening into a massive, rough-hewn block of pale granite. The handle twisted, wood becoming thick, rusted rebar wrapped in leather.

It wasn't a tool anymore. It was a boulder on a stick. An ancient weapon of the earth.

CRACK-BOOM.

Hwan slammed the massive stone club into the creature’s chest.

The impact was seismic. The Jellyfish Man didn't just fly backward, it became a projectile. It slammed into the cavern wall with such force that the rock face splintered. Dust rained down. The entire cavern shook.

Hwan hefted the stone hammer onto his shoulder. It had to weigh three hundred pounds, but he held it like a toy. He looked back at the students, his eyes burning with feral amber light. But that was not the only shocking thing, Hwan appeared to have transformed too.

“What are you staring at?” Hwan growled. “Run!”

They wasted no time plunging back into darkness, up the long winding staircase carved into rock—endless, spiraling, scraping the breath from their lungs toward whatever they prayed was an exit.

They hit a wall. A dead end: a smooth stone chamber with no outlets. The sound of their breathless pants felt loud in the small space.

“Hwan, where...?”

SWISH. THUD.

A heavy stone door slid shut behind them, sealing the stairs.

"We're trapped!" Plague yelled, pounding on the stone.

“No,” Hwan said. His voice no longer echoed; it was unnervingly close.

He stood in the dim light at center of the chamber, leaning on the massive stone hammer.

“You’re trapped,” Hwan corrected.

He lifted the hammer one last time, and swung upward, driving the stone head into the ceiling with a deafening, rhythmic clang.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

And then, ...light exploded, and he was gone in a burst of gold.

They were alone, ears ringing, in the dark, betrayed.

“Of course he teleported!” Plague roared, kicking the wall. “The snake! The shady Saja! We’re dead! We are so, so dead!”

"No," Echo rubbed her arms as she shivered. ”I don't think he's a Saja.”

SCRRRAPE.

A noise from above. A slice of light cut down as a metal hatch squealed open, painfully bright. A silhouette leaned over the edge.

“Well, well, well. Looks like the Nerd Rescue Party needed rescuing. What I wouldn’t give to take a picture of your faces right now.”

“Lisa?” Echo whispered, shielding her eyes against the glare.

Another voice joined, bright and incredulous. “Are you guys okay?”

… Kyra.

Then a final shadow stepped into view. Kyle Baek tossed a rope ladder down; the rungs hit the stone floor with a clatter. His voice was deep, bitter, hollow.

“Welcome, fellow livestock,” he said. “To the Pen.”

Camp Syndicate: The Parasitic Barrier (Escape from Club Apophis, 25)

STORYLINE: ...10 MINUTES EARLIER

The forest at the edge of the Forbidden Zone wasn’t quiet; it was rejected. No insects chirped. No wind stirred the pines. Only the cold, high-voltage hum of hungry silence remained.

Echo crouched in the dirt, breath misting. Her purple-striped sleeves brushed a carpet of dead needles. Behind her, the clearing glowed feverish green under the team’s work lights—drones, signal poles, and weapon packs scattered around the steel crate that held the Black Snakeskin Box. They looked less like students and more like a cult preparing to storm hell.

Ghost didn’t speak; he just acted.

“Comms test, G-3,” he signed with his Halo-gloves, hefting an insulated pole topped with a transmitter. He eased it forward until it breached the shimmering boundary of the Forbidden Zone.

The transmitter’s green light died the instant it crossed the perimeter.

Plague gave a low whistle. “Physics just quit. Another billion credits gone. Stellar start.”

Echo’s jaw tightened. She despised failure. Order bending into nonsense set her on edge.

She brushed past Ghost, pulling items from her pack.

“Experiment E-1.” She tossed a high-powered flashlight. It died mid-air. Then her phone—its screen went black before it hit the ground.

Last, she produced a small pink plastic ’80s Swatch, wound it, and tossed it into the Zone like a sacrifice.

It landed among the dead leaves, still ticking. Smug old tech. Alive.

“It’s selective,” Echo murmured. “Not an EMP, not a jammer. It’s eating everything with a current.”

Plague snorted, gesturing to the pile of dead gear. “Great. And we brought a picnic.”

“No,” Minjo corrected. Her eyes shifted from her dead console to the steel crate. “It eats human power.”
The glint in her gaze sharpened as she focused on the Black Snakeskin Box. “So, let’s feed it something else.”

She unlatched the crate. Inside, the sinister box pulsed with a faint, oily light. This wasn't tech, at least nothing Minjo could understand. It was a core of impossible energy, a spark that could power quantum entanglement from a container the size of a heart.

“I’ve failed to interface with it,” she admitted, rare defeat roughening her tone. “It has no code. It... resists analysis.”

Echo stared at the exposed core. It seemed to throb in time with their movements.

“Wait,” she whispered. “I think it’s been watching us. Laughing each time we fail.”

“A trolling multidimensional power source. Perfect.” Plague flipped a bird at the core, which flashed in response.

Minjo and Echo exchanged a glance.

“Alright,” Minjo said, slipping from analysis to command. “Echo, you’re the empath. Try luring it into the containment unit.”

Echo swallowed. The task felt right—like it had chosen her. The Core was less a device than a feral animal.

She pulled her retro datapad from her pack—a lavender relic with a green phosphor screen. Laying a palm on the Box, she ignored the feel of cold, scaled skin and linked the pad.

The screen flared—not with static, but with alien glyphs that writhed like serpents under glass. The Box was speaking: a language of pure, hungry curiosity.

Then the glyphs resolved. Two lines appeared on either side of the screen, and a single pixel bounced between them.

A small smile touched Echo's lips. “You guys aren’t going to believe this. I think it’s trying to play PONG.”

A ball of light bounced off one edge of the screen and headed for her side. She returned it, and the glyphs blinked in what looked like a smile.

“We can play, but first we need to get you into your new home. Easy now,” she murmured, guiding the datapad. The Core, trusting her now, followed the pad’s pull like a charmed snake. It levitated, humming, and slid into the brass-and-crystal housing Minjo had built.

“I have it,” Echo breathed, a surge of triumph cutting through the dread. “It’s contained. The unit is sealed.”

The moment the seal clicked shut, the serpentine glyphs swirled and bounced the digital ball to her again. She laughed in delight.

Then suddenly, the ball froze mid-play. The glyphs scattered, racing in panic, then coiled into tight, defensive knots, -- as if bracing for an unseen strike.

The air changed, as if the world itself were holding its breath.

Echo felt it before she saw it: the sense of being watched. The scent of rust and something sickeningly sweet, like burnt sugar.

A new awareness crawled up her spine, different from the Zone’s vague hunger. This wasn’t a diffuse threat. This was focused, predatory attention.

Reflected in the dark glass of her datapad, a new reflection joined her own.

It was pale. It was smiling.

Her breath caught.

She looked up, -- just as the Ice Cream Man brought the hammer down.

He didn’t strike her.

The heavy, worn hammer crushed the containment unit. The Core fractured.

It didn’t explode. It unleashed.

A giant shadow-serpent, a thing of pure, lightless rage, tore itself free from the broken housing. It shrieked, a psychic howl that rattled Echo’s teeth. A tornado of darkness ripped through the clearing as hundreds of smaller shadows were sucked from the trees, swirling around the serpent as it grew, raging in a vortex of dust, leaves, and smoke.

Then, as fast as it had appeared, the serpent shot past them, a black comet streaking deep into the Forbidden Zone.

Silence fell.

Ghost had already moved, placing himself between the students and the intruder, hand on his sidearm.

The Ice Cream Man didn’t move. He simply pointed his hammer in the direction the serpent had gone. His voice was muffled and hollow behind the porcelain mask.

“It returns to its master,” he said. “Your cursed friend, Yoon Jihoon, is that direction.”

The words hit them like a physical blow.

“What?” Minjo whispered, her scientific certainty shattering. “Who… who are you?”

The Ice Cream Man lifted his free hand to his face. With a soft click, he unhooked the mask and let it fall.

He wasn’t human. His face was sharp and pale, a smile that was too wide, with teeth that looked like they could crack bone, and his eyes burned with a feral amber light.

“I am Hwan, Guardian of the Barrier,” he said, voice now clear and cold, like gravel and frost. “And you’re not going anywhere, not without a real guide.”
