Fantasy Faire 2017: The Crow Tengu

STORYLINE: There once was a young Crow Tengu who was told by his parents to stay away from humans, (the Tengu were forbidden from interfering in human affairs). But he simply could not obey the rules. His heart belonged to a little girl with a laugh that sounded like the call of crows. Adorable. To him, she was one of them, even if she had no feathers. It all started one day when he was out scouting the mountain. Tucked deep in the forest by a babbling brook, was a small human nest. There was a sickly looking girl sitting outside alone. Being curious, he flew down and asked her what she was doing. She explained she was gravely ill and her parents were both working hard to earn enough money to treat her illness. He shook his feathers in confusion at the difficulties of human rituals, but before he could ask about it, a rain of questions showered down on him. Since he liked the attention, he told her stories about himself, his people, and their oral history. She hung on his every word. Her eyes, which seemed so dull before, now sparked with life. So each day he would fly back to his number one fan and tell her a new story. By the time fall came, she had made a full recovery and would return to school. The crows too were preparing to fly south for the winter. With a big hug, she thanked him for keeping her spirits up. He fluffed out his chest in pride, and then plucked out one of his feathers to give her, "Always remember me." He felt sad their storytime was ending. She laughed her adorable crow laugh, said it was impossible for her to ever forget him. ...Many years later she wrote a best selling children's book, "The Many Wild and Wonderful Tales of the Crow Tengu."

Fantasy Faire 2017: The Violinist of Venice

STORYLINE: Water lapped at the edges of the Piazza San Marco as the night sky softened to pinks and purples. A lone figure emerged from the shadows carrying a violin case and music stand. He was dressed in formal clothes from another time period. In any other city, he would have drawn stares however this was Venice. Wearing a mask was not considered odd either. As the man took off his cloak, and positioned his music stand, several locals quickly took up best sitting spots nearby. They knew to expect his exquisite concerts in the spring. And he did not disappoint. His music was so powerful, several women tried to discreetly wipe away their tears. Money began to fill his violin case. There were murmurs he was someone famous, but no one really knew. He didn't talk much, just nodded and said thank you, He always took his earnings to the nuns at St. Mark's Basilica and asked them to donate it for him to cancer research. The nuns knew to not ask questions, but surely his heartfelt music reflected a soul grieving the loss of someone dear.

2066: Geisha of Debtors Prison

STORYLINE: Rain fell gently into the rejuvenation pool. It was a special lubricant for the joints of androids, and cyborgs. His constant companions, Gertie 1 and 2 sighed joyfully. More accurately they were the jail-keepers of his personal hell. He would never get used to it, this artificial prison of a body he inhabited. It was one year ago, when he was given a choice: Die from his injuries in debtors' prison, or willingly submit to full cyberization to work off his debts. What was his crime for such a horrendous sentence? He refused to pay the Cyber Mafia over a lost bet. The Deathmatch between BattleBot EVA and the vampire was obviously rigged. So he threw his scumbag loan shark into the display case for some silly ancient relic. And for that crime, he was turned from a bearded hard drinking gambler into the sleek androgynous Gynoid Geisha no.10023. His only purpose was to please the twisted kinks of his master, Kujo, ringleader of the Cyber Mafia. Was it fair? Hell no. But the cops weren't coming to save him. He signed paperwork making the cyberization legal. Besides, he was just a brain lodged inside a very expensive polycarbonate body now, literally the property of Kujo. What was left to save? He died. And the worst part was, (or was it the best part?), he felt less and less like the person he used to be. Was it true that a person's identity was created by how they looked and how people reacted to that appearance? He saw the world with new eyes, and not just because they were digital. People saw him with new eyes too. He would never admit he didn't completely hate it. ...Still, he secretly wished Gertie would look away so he could kill the mean son-of-bitch who did this to him.

2065: Kujo of the Cyber Mafia

STORYLINE: High above the busy streets of Insilico, a man's laughter rang out from the most plush penthouse of the city. Kujo, ringleader of the Cyber Mafia, was plugged into an expensive VR gaming rig. A silent android watched him in the otherwise empty room as he twisted and dodged attacks from some unseen enemy. "Hey, Gertie," he yelled a little too loudly, "I haven't had this much fun since I was a little shit in the global games tourney." The android nodded politely. "Superior technique, Master. No one will suspect the mighty EVA is piloted by a human this time." The droid turned to look at the flickering security monitors from her master's overhyped Death Match: Battle Bot EVA vs a bona-fide Creature of the Night. No one thought the vampire would win, it looked like it was starved to death. Interest in the fight was remarkably high. Perhaps because it was so rare to see a living Nosferatu. They were thought extinct long ago. She looked at the massive number of bets pouring in from the net. "Everything is proceeding to plan. EVA is heavily favored to win." Kujo laughed, "I think its time EVA stumbled, don't you?" He faked a trip. Gertie watched silently as the vampire took advantage. It made quick work of Eva, then leapt into the screaming crowd to begin feasting on them. Gertie turned away from the carnage. Was it wise to let that... thing, live? Wait. She turned to the haloscreen of the VIP viewing boxes. Fights were breaking out. "Master look!" she pointed. They both saw it at the same time. The display case of Kujo's most prized possession, the Yata no Kagami, was shattered as a gambler tossed a loan shark into the display. Kujo quickly unhooked himself from the rig. Fury blazed in his cybernetically enhanced eyes, "Ready my copter, NOW!"

The Real Prince Charming

STORYLINE: Perhaps you have heard the story of Cinderella. But what you haven't heard is the real tale. There are no such thing as magic and fairy godmothers. No, this story has its own special magic, albeit a very human one. You see it all began when the castle Chimney Sweep was dismissed for the evening, since he was not needed during the grand ball. As he was walking home, he heard the heart aching sobs of the only young girl in town not at the ball....

2065: Fall of the Eden

STORYLINE: From across the open spaceship hanger, he could see the anxious faces of the freedom fighters, called the Eden Railroad, waiting for him. When the coast was clear, they gestured for him to quickly come. He took a deep breath, prayed, then raced across the hanger. "You there, stop!" A guard spotted him. Loud metallic clangs struck the metal grating around him. He zigged and zagged. Keep running! He was so close, just a few more....  Suddenly, a white hot blast of heat hit him from above. He felt weightless for a moment, then everything faded to black.  ...As his conscious returned, the first thing he noticed was the roar of wind in his ears. His eyes snapped open. The giant city in the sky was growing smaller and smaller above him. All the events in his life which lead up to this fateful moment poured into his mind.  ...His parents telling him to hide as the monstrous half-human super soldiers rounded up everyone in his village. His life on the streets as an orphan. The struggle to learn the strange technology of the "English." His shock after an elderly couple took him in, and explained the truth of his situation. He was what they called an Eden, untouched by all cyberization or genetic manipulation. He was worth a thousand times his weight in gold. Why? Because millions around the world were afflicted with strange maladies. There were few living purely human gene pools left on Earth. His people, the Amish, had sworn off technology since the 18th century. Instead of spaceships, they had horse and buggy. The culture shock had been severe, but he had done his best to blend in. He lived in fear of being caught and dissected for his pristine DNA. As the ground raced up to greet him, suddenly, his fall stopped. He felt a magnetic force around his waist. He was caught him in a tractor beam. Above him was the Ship of the Eden Railroad pockmarked with laser blasts, but still flyable. He was saved!

The Hamster’s Human Toys

STORYLINE: Grammy Hammy was excited. Tonight was her annual New Year's Eve party and all the neighborhood pups were invited. Just in time for the festivities, the mail delivered intricately craved miniature New Years decorations. She bounced happily to her little bonsai display and carefully added her latest little treasures. "There," she stepped back to admire her handiwork. It was just so adorable! Her special guests will be so delighted! ....Well maybe not the pale humorless male who always complained bitterly about being picked-up (he even bit her once!), but the girl was always cheerful and enjoyed being cuddled. Oh! It was almost sunset. The pups better hurry or they will miss it!  It was only after the sunset on New Year's Eve that the mini Ninjas would become visible. They were strange looking creatures, tiny hairless apes (and not all that attractive if you asked her), but they were always welcome in her home as honored guests. Why? Because they were tireless protectors of children. Each year she did her best to honor them and thank them for their service.
