Midnight Order: Maximilian Spyder (Escape from Club Apophis, 51)

STORYLINE: "We are reporting live from the edge of the Forbidden Zone!"

The frantic voice crackled from a holographic tablet resting on the steel desk, its audio ragged with static and barely cutting through the deafening thrum vibrating from outside.

From the quiet dark of the Okinawa command bunker, Maximilian Spyder watched the glitching archive footage. His long, pale fingers danced over the tablet's controls while his other hand idly twirled a black king chess piece. He was an ancient Briton warlord surviving in a cybernetic age. In stark contrast to his jet-black hair, his skin was the color of bleached bone. But it was his eyes that truly betrayed his terrifying power: solid, pitch-black voids of a supreme apex predator. Where his eternal rival’s eyes burned with gold, Maximilian’s shone with a cold, merciless crimson.

Behind him, torrential rain battered the reinforced glass, each drop a tiny, violent percussion against the sweating steel walls. The storm was merely a backdrop to the mechanized empire mobilizing for war on the tarmac below. Matte-black stealth hover-copters whipped the heavy, ozone-scented air into a wall of sound. Beneath them, thousands of vampire soldiers marched with machine-like precision. They wore high-tech, interlocking tactical armor and carried silver-alloy rifles equipped with UV-laser sights that sliced through the deluge like thin, blood-red wires.

Stark white UN insignias gleamed on the sides of the massive transports. They were no longer monsters lurking in the shadows. They were a supernatural superpower: authorized, weaponized, and preparing to strike.

A heavy transport shuddered the ceiling overhead. Maximilian didn't blink. His focus remained locked on the tablet as the reporter's face, framed by the rusted, towering gates of the Forbidden Zone, filled the screen.

"It’s not radioactive! There are no biohazards!" Lisa Liemawr’s scream tore over the ambient roar of the engines. "That’s right, folks, it’s all a government lie! What’s really inside the Zone is monsters! The government has a pact with them! Our boy, Yoon Jihoon, he’s the first person to escape that place alive, and they set him on fire for it!"

The camera panned over a crowd of terrified students, eventually zooming in on a dossier image of Yoon Jihoon. A second later, the feed cut to the final, horrifying footage: a human-sized inferno blazing across a college baseball field.

Maximilian stopped twirling the chess piece.

"Excuse me, Sir," a high-ranking officer interrupted, his combat boots clicking sharply as he stepped into the dark bunker. "Incoming Deep-Net encrypted call. It appears to be from Mother Superior."

Maximilian’s red irises flared slightly, the title echoing like a ghost from another decade. "Are the credentials legitimate?"

"The security certificate is out of date, but yes. It's an authentic ping from the Neu Seoul network." The officer handed over a heavy, secure halophone and immediately stepped back, lowering his eyes.

Maximilian laid the device flat on the tactical table and pressed accept.

The air above the projector shimmered, smelling faintly of scorched copper. A classified, military-grade VR link established itself, weaving a flawless, table-top hologram into the dimly lit bunker. The figure that materialized was not the visionary engineer Maximilian expected. It was a blonde woman clad in the austere, symbol-laden habit of a nun. Her digital avatar blinked, adjusting to the simulated rain hammering the bunker and the sharp chemical scent of jet fuel drifting through the ventilation.

"Who are you?" Maximilian’s voice was a low, authoritative rumble that seemed to vibrate in the very floorboards. "And how did you get this line of communication?"

"I’m taking a massive risk contacting you," the woman replied. Her digital form stabilized, and she lowered her hood to reveal a cold, deeply exhausted face. "My name is Paine. Acting Mother Superior of the Children of Apophis."

Maximilian planted his knuckles on the heavy-duty tactical table and leaned forward. "And why is Lucien Ginerva’s most loyal disciple calling his archenemy?"

The hologram flickered as Paine bristled. "For two years, I believed my predecessor, Sophia, was merely in hiding. Tonight, I received confirmation her body has been found."

Paine’s digital avatar shuddered slightly, her rigid posture failing for a fraction of a second.

"She left a contingency packet with strict instructions to open it only if her death was confirmed. I broke the seal an hour ago." She swallowed. "Its contents included her secret contacts and far more than I ever wanted to know."

Maximilian murmured, the sound blending with the thunder outside. "Yes, I have not heard from her in some time. I assumed the worst."

"So it’s true, then. She was working for you. A traitor and a heretic," she sneered.

"Hmm," Maximilian offered a terrifyingly polite smile. "I imagine she contacted me for the exact same reason you are now."

Paine ground her teeth. "Make no mistake, I am not your ally. What I want, what we, the Children of Apophis, want, is to restore the Old Ways."

Maximilian let out a short, hollow chuckle. He picked up a crystal goblet of synthetic blood from the desk, swirling the thick, scarlet liquid slowly.

"I’m aware you run Lucien’s scam plastic surgery clinic," he said, his tone entirely unbothered. "Something extraordinary must have happened for you to turn on a master you've served for decades. But first, enlighten me. What exactly do you mean by the Old Ways?"

"The natural order," Paine said, her voice dropping into a fanatic's mesmerizing cadence. "All things must die."

Maximilian raised an eyebrow, his gaze dragging over the intricate embroidered symbols on her habit. "So you worship Apophis not as a God, but as the symbol of death?"

"Neither. Apophis is a force of nature," Paine corrected sharply. "Entropy. The physical direction of time itself. Order to disorder. There are too many undead walking the Earth, defying the arrow of time." She pointed a trembling digital finger at him. "How old, exactly, are you?"

Maximilian smiled, allowing a single, razor-sharp fang to peek over his lower lip. "An amusing irony, Sister. You worship decay, yet you serve the oldest, most vain creature of our kind, a man obsessed with erasing the very signs of decay you revere. You don't practice your religion very well."

"Apparently, neither did MasterGin," Paine fired back, stepping so close to the edge of her holographic boundary that the projection crackled at its edges. "He tricked us. Betrayed his own creed. He doesn't want to feed Apophis to honor the universe. Sophia warned me, but I didn't believe her."

She paused, her hands pressing flat against her habit.

"MasterGin wants to use Apophis, the only God capable of killing other Gods, to murder one for him. He wants to slay his creator."

Maximilian went entirely still. The scarlet liquid in his goblet stopped swirling. He set the crystal glass down with a slow, deliberate click that cut through the baseline hum of the bunker.

"Lucien wants to slay the Pharaoh?" Maximilian’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "A bold delusion, even for him. How does a fraud plastic surgeon intend to shackle a cosmic force?"

Paine took a sharp, jagged breath, her eyes darting to the tactical maps on his desk. "He spent centuries engineering the infrastructure." She stopped, her jaw working. "Apophis cannot be tamed by worship alone. So he changed the parameters. If the god will not obey him, he will trap it in something that will."

Maximilian glanced at the peripheral glow of his tablet, where the muted footage of the university students continued to loop. His eyes locked onto the frozen frame of Yoon Jihoon. He tapped the glass directly over the boy's face.

"The boy who escaped the Forbidden Zone,” Maximilian murmured, completing the equation. He looked at Paine. "He is building a vessel."

"Yes," Paine whispered, the confession leaving her sounding entirely hollow. "The Opening of the Mouth ceremony is tomorrow. If he succeeds, he controls the weapon that ends the Ruler. And that’s only the start. He intends to remake the world in his design, with power I doubt he can control. The consequences are too horrible to fathom."

"Indeed," Maximilian said softly. He leaned back, letting the silence stretch between them until the weight of it became a weapon.

A sheet of rain lashing across the reinforced window swallowed the tarmac armada in a blanket of grey. Paine looked past him, taking in the silhouettes of the stealth transports and the sheer scale of the mobilization.

"Can you stop them?" she asked, the desperation finally bleeding through her rigid exterior. "Can you take them out?"

Maximilian did not answer immediately. He reached beneath his heavy tactical collar and pulled out a thick silver chain. Hanging from the center was a single, yellowed human canine tooth. He laid it flat on the illuminated tactical map, the ancient bone stark against the glowing blue topography of Neu Seoul.

"With this tooth, I purchased sovereignty for the Vampire Nation."

For a heartbeat, the red in Maximilian's eyes disappeared, leaving only two endless black wells staring back at her. Lightning violently strobed outside, flashing his pale face in stark white relief.

"Berlin, 1945. The Allies were so desperate, they forged an alliance with creatures that eat them."

"Wait a minute." Paine’s holographic eyes grew wide as she stared at the relic. "Are you suggesting that tooth is...?"

"Yes." Maximilian tucked the necklace back beneath his armor, hiding history away. "We can make many things that should be dead, die, possibly even Lucien Ginerva. However, the Ruler is beyond our capabilities. He is too old and too powerful."

"So this conversation is pointless. I shouldn’t have called." Paine moved her hand toward her console to sever the connection.

"Not necessarily," Maximilian said, his voice smooth and absolute. "Unlike my opponent in Neu Seoul, I believe in evolving with humanity, instead of enslaving it. Our purpose is the Rule of Law. Capture, convict, and if found guilty, imprison. Surely that should make me worthy of a little more time to see this great work through to the end."

Paine held his crimson gaze for a long moment. Whatever calculation she was running showed in the tight line of her mouth. Finally, she reached into her pocket. She held out her hand, and a glowing, holographic data chip materialized in the air between them, instantly transferring its encrypted payload to Maximilian’s terminal.

"The barrier override codes," Paine said.

Maximilian smiled, a genuine expression of respect. "You’ve done the right thing. Thank you for this intel. My people will ensure you and your loyalists are protected in the fallout."

"The boy, Yoon Jihoon, and his university friends too," she quickly added, her voice tightening with newfound panic. "Or no deal."

Maximilian stood up. He pulled the image of Yoon Jihoon back to the center of the display, studying the boy's face with cold, clinical detachment.

Paine went rigid, her projection pixelating for a moment when the silence dragged on. She had already given him the access codes; the leverage was gone. "Did you hear me? I said the students must be safely extracted."

Maximilian ignored the demand entirely, keeping his back to her. Somewhere in the bunker, a cooling unit cycled on, pushing cold air across the room.

Behind him, the heavy steel door of the bunker hissed open. A communications officer stepped in, his face pale under his tactical visor, holding a secure datapad. "Excuse me, Sir. The President of the United States is on the line. The US abstaining vote is now a yes. The resolution has passed."

Paine blinked, her avatar glitching violently in shock. "The US President? No, that is impossible. He’s one of the clinic’s primary benefactors. Why is he talking to you?”

Maximilian’s smile widened into something truly wolfish as he finally turned around. He picked up his tablet and cycled the authorization screens with clinical precision.

"Lucien Ginerva is a theatrical idiot," Maximilian said softly. "He actually thought he could threaten to melt the face off a sitting US President during the State of the Union address and not expect consequences."

He turned the tablet so Paine could read the flashing red authorization codes.

"Washington just signed the resolution," Maximilian stated, his voice ringing with the cold clarity of a funeral bell. "The United Nations has officially authorized us to violate Neu Seoul’s airspace. Monstrum's sovereign immunity on the Korean peninsula is revoked."

"But the clinic," Paine whispered, her digital form trembling as the reality of her complete ruin set in. "The children. What happens to the rest of us when your troops breach the barrier?"

Maximilian stepped aside, granting her an unobstructed view of the massive military armada spooling up their engines through the glass. He reached down, his pale fingers closing around the black king on the chessboard, and casually flicked it off the table. It clattered loudly onto the metal floor.

"Thank you for your report, Mother Superior," Maximilian said. His tone carried no malice, only the absolute, chilling certainty of a general who had already won the war. "Have a good death... when your time comes."

Before Paine could utter another word, Maximilian severed the connection. The hologram collapsed into a shower of blue sparks. He turned his back on the empty space and walked out into the pouring rain without a coat or umbrella.

Outside, thousands of Night Troops snapped to attention. Every head turned to follow him. Every soldier stood perfectly still in the downpour. The hover-copters continued roaring above, their searchlights cutting through the dark. Cold rain sheeted off his shoulders. He raised one hand, and thousands moved simultaneously.

Cyber Fair / Salvage Station: The Digital Shinobi (Escape from Club Apophis, 42)

STORYLINE:

Mission objective: Rescue classmate Yoon Jihoon.
Team: 7 students of Jae Won University, 6 remaining.
Location: GIN AESTHETICA™ plastic surgery clinic.

It was a tragedy in slow motion.

Ghost smelled it first. Clove smoke and a cold that didn't belong to the building. Something ancient was close. His hands flew up in a sharp, commanding gesture toward a nearby door, but no one was looking at his hands.

"Scatter!" Minjo yelled. "Rendezvous at the car in the Safe Zone!”

Ghost gripped her shoulder hard and stepped into her path. Speech was not an option. He mouthed a single, fierce command: No. Stronger together.

But without her glasses, she couldn't read his lips.

Click. Click. Click.

Heels in the distance echoed, sharp and unhurried. There was no time to argue. No time to herd them back together.

The team was already in motion. Five sets of frantic footsteps fragmented in different directions. His team, scattered. A second later, the heavy, synchronized thud of Enforcers echoed from the opposite end of the hall, moving to intercept.

Ghost took the wall. He activated his Gecko Grip, scaling the smooth vertical surface in two silent bounds. He shoved a ceiling tile aside and hauled himself into the dark ductwork. His Haloglove cast a pale blue light over a nest of thick white cables. He didn't hesitate. He grabbed the primary data bundle and ripped it from its housing just as Minjo rounded the far corner.

Below him, the red eyes of the security cameras flickered and died.

It was a brutal, unrefined solution, but it blinded the hunters. It gave his pack a fighting chance.

Ghost popped the Cursed Energy battery from his Haloglove and slid it into his Nano Stealth Cloak. Communication was a luxury. Stealth was survival. The high-tech fabric flickered with violent static, and then, pixel by pixel, he dissolved into the dark architecture of the ceiling.

Click. Click. Stop. MasterGin stepped into the corridor directly beneath the vent.

Clove smoke drifted upwards. Then the silence. The silence was the worst part.

Ghost’s lungs locked tight. The air pressure in the hallway seemed to drop, stolen entirely by the monster standing below. A false surgeon. A vain god. The kind of monster whose presence warped the room around him. In that moment, Ghost finally understood how Jihoon had been seduced by Monstrum.

The powerful vampire’s icy gaze swept the dead cameras. He sensed the blind spot.

Ghost snapped his eyes shut. He clamped down on his own biology, willing his heartbeat into a slow, dormant rhythm. It was a Shinobi discipline meant for surviving underwater. His chest burned with the need for oxygen. His internal clock ticked away the longest twenty seconds of his life.

Finally, the heels clicked into an adjacent consultation room.

Ghost let out one slow breath through his nose. He gave it three more seconds, listening for the pause of someone turning back, before dropping weightlessly to the floor. He pressed his ear against the cold white marble wall. MasterGin's voice came through, sharp enough to cut. "...those cameras are worth more than a hundred of you! Either restore my cameras immediately, or explain to me why I continue paying you!" A second later, a new command, "Scratch that. Weld the sewer access doors shut. Permanently!"

Ghost pulled back from the wall. His mind mapped the variables. One exit. One priority.

He moved.

He sprinted back the way MasterGin had come, moving soundlessly toward a new set of approaching footsteps. The maintenance crew. Ghost had memorized the labyrinth of the Clinic. He knew exactly where the choke points were. He slipped into an alcove and waited.

The crew rushed past. One man lagged heavily behind the rest, panting under the massive weight of a multi-arm mechanical welding unit strapped to his back.

Perfect.

Ghost transferred the Cursed Energy battery from his cloak back to his Haloglove. Stealth was no longer needed. A weapon was.

He stepped from the shadows directly behind the straggler. He pressed two fingers to the exposed skin of the man's neck and delivered a maximum voltage jolt from his glove. The man folded without a sound. Ghost caught the heavy equipment before it could hit the floor and dragged the unconscious body into a dark supply closet.

Within ninety seconds, Ghost was wearing the straggler’s red and black uniform, and strapped the heavy welding apparatus on. He pulled the dark welding visor down over his face and sprinted to catch up with the crew, forcing his lungs to heave in loud, ragged pants.

The Crew Leader spun around. "You! What's wrong with you, are you dying?"

Ghost nodded, slumped his shoulders, and feigned breathlessness. It was a flawless cover for his muteness.

The Crew Leader turned away, disgusted.

When they reached the sewer access door, Ghost pushed to the front. The leader ordered him to lock down the compromised digital kiosk and weld the door shut, while the main crew handled the heavy elevator doors nearby.

Ghost knelt by the panel. He didn’t fix the kiosk. His gloved fingers flew across the exposed circuitry, completing his earlier hack, a backdoor bypass. Then he engaged the welding torch. He laid down a line of sparks on the doorframe that looked convincing to the naked eye but actually left the door completely unsealed.

"Move!" the Crew Leader barked. "Find the camera short!"

Ghost shuffled after them, disgruntled and bored. As they swept the next corridor, he deliberately lingered behind to cross the wires of a secondary junction box, shorting out a fresh row of cameras.

The Crew Leader threw his hands up in enraged confusion, screaming into his halophone about a cascading system failure.

In the chaos, Ghost stepped backward into a shadow and vanished.

By the access door, he paused and graded his performance. Approximately half of the clinic's surveillance network was disabled, and the team's escape route remained intact.

Before leaving, he projected from his Haloglove the underground map. Satisfied he knew the way, he plunged into the dark labyrinth with his Gecko Grip reactivated.

Scrambling across the vaulted stone like a spider, he was careful to avoid the foul, rushing water below and the toxic bioluminescent fungi clinging to the walls.

Higher and higher he climbed through the gloom. Left. Straight. Another left. Then a hard turn right.

Finally the sterile chill of the clinic faded, replaced by a growing scent of rot and humidity.

A large cavern opened up. The Safe Zone.

The air felt different here. Cleaner. Quieter. The pressure that haunted the rest of the sewer was absent, as though the safe zone itself refused to respect Monstrum’s authority.

He dropped silently to a limestone slab near the 1929 Ford Coupe, using the glow of his haloglove to cut through the dark. The car was still smoking, frozen in the violent aftermath of a crash that happened a century ago. Inside, a body sat perfectly still, preserved by whatever force kept the car from rusting. High above the wreckage, a rebel had slashed the Monstrum logo with red ink.

Ghost stood still for a moment and let his body recalibrate. The ambient hum that had been pressing against his skull since they entered the clinic was gone.

He scanned the damp cavern. The only sound was the rushing water of the drainage outflow.

No one else had made it.

He stood very still. The water rushed. Nothing.

He shoved the panic aside and reached for rage instead.

He unbuckled the heavy welding rig and let it drop to the stone with a loud echoing thud.

If he was the only one to reach the safe zone, then it was up to him to ruin whatever MasterGin was planning for Jihoon.

He pulled the toolkit from his belt and laid the instruments out in a perfect, disciplined row on the fender.

The dented hood groaned as he wrenched it upward. No engine block. No pistons. He already knew that. The carbon fiber lattice was still intact, the obsidian coils still spiraled around the ceramic core like ribs around a heart. The violet liquid still pulsed through its tubes in a slow, deliberate rhythm, the one that vibrated in the back of the teeth rather than the ears.

Minjo had called it an Entropy Drive.

Ghost had a different name for it.

A bomb.

He reached blindly to his right to grab his screwdriver.

Fingers met empty stone.

He frowned and shined the haloglove downward. The screwdriver was now sitting neatly on his left side.

He blinked, turning his head slowly, sweeping the empty, violet-lit cavern.

Nothing moved. Nothing breathed.

Ghost picked the tool up and placed it deliberately back on his right side.

Strange.

He turned his attention back to the engine.

Camp Syndicate: The Parasitic Barrier (Escape from Club Apophis, 25)

STORYLINE: ...10 MINUTES EARLIER

The forest at the edge of the Forbidden Zone wasn’t quiet; it was rejected. No insects chirped. No wind stirred the pines. Only the cold, high-voltage hum of hungry silence remained.

Echo crouched in the dirt, breath misting. Her purple-striped sleeves brushed a carpet of dead needles. Behind her, the clearing glowed feverish green under the team’s work lights—drones, signal poles, and weapon packs scattered around the steel crate that held the Black Snakeskin Box. They looked less like students and more like a cult preparing to storm hell.

Ghost didn’t speak; he just acted.

“Comms test, G-3,” he signed with his Halo-gloves, hefting an insulated pole topped with a transmitter. He eased it forward until it breached the shimmering boundary of the Forbidden Zone.

The transmitter’s green light died the instant it crossed the perimeter.

Plague gave a low whistle. “Physics just quit. Another billion credits gone. Stellar start.”

Echo’s jaw tightened. She despised failure. Order bending into nonsense set her on edge.

She brushed past Ghost, pulling items from her pack.

“Experiment E-1.” She tossed a high-powered flashlight. It died mid-air. Then her phone—its screen went black before it hit the ground.

Last, she produced a small pink plastic ’80s Swatch, wound it, and tossed it into the Zone like a sacrifice.

It landed among the dead leaves, still ticking. Smug old tech. Alive.

“It’s selective,” Echo murmured. “Not an EMP, not a jammer. It’s eating everything with a current.”

Plague snorted, gesturing to the pile of dead gear. “Great. And we brought a picnic.”

“No,” Minjo corrected. Her eyes shifted from her dead console to the steel crate. “It eats human power.”
The glint in her gaze sharpened as she focused on the Black Snakeskin Box. “So, let’s feed it something else.”

She unlatched the crate. Inside, the sinister box pulsed with a faint, oily light. This wasn't tech, at least nothing Minjo could understand. It was a core of impossible energy, a spark that could power quantum entanglement from a container the size of a heart.

“I’ve failed to interface with it,” she admitted, rare defeat roughening her tone. “It has no code. It... resists analysis.”

Echo stared at the exposed core. It seemed to throb in time with their movements.

“Wait,” she whispered. “I think it’s been watching us. Laughing each time we fail.”

“A trolling multidimensional power source. Perfect.” Plague flipped a bird at the core, which flashed in response.

Minjo and Echo exchanged a glance.

“Alright,” Minjo said, slipping from analysis to command. “Echo, you’re the empath. Try luring it into the containment unit.”

Echo swallowed. The task felt right—like it had chosen her. The Core was less a device than a feral animal.

She pulled her retro datapad from her pack—a lavender relic with a green phosphor screen. Laying a palm on the Box, she ignored the feel of cold, scaled skin and linked the pad.

The screen flared—not with static, but with alien glyphs that writhed like serpents under glass. The Box was speaking: a language of pure, hungry curiosity.

Then the glyphs resolved. Two lines appeared on either side of the screen, and a single pixel bounced between them.

A small smile touched Echo's lips. “You guys aren’t going to believe this. I think it’s trying to play PONG.”

A ball of light bounced off one edge of the screen and headed for her side. She returned it, and the glyphs blinked in what looked like a smile.

“We can play, but first we need to get you into your new home. Easy now,” she murmured, guiding the datapad. The Core, trusting her now, followed the pad’s pull like a charmed snake. It levitated, humming, and slid into the brass-and-crystal housing Minjo had built.

“I have it,” Echo breathed, a surge of triumph cutting through the dread. “It’s contained. The unit is sealed.”

The moment the seal clicked shut, the serpentine glyphs swirled and bounced the digital ball to her again. She laughed in delight.

Then suddenly, the ball froze mid-play. The glyphs scattered, racing in panic, then coiled into tight, defensive knots, -- as if bracing for an unseen strike.

The air changed, as if the world itself were holding its breath.

Echo felt it before she saw it: the sense of being watched. The scent of rust and something sickeningly sweet, like burnt sugar.

A new awareness crawled up her spine, different from the Zone’s vague hunger. This wasn’t a diffuse threat. This was focused, predatory attention.

Reflected in the dark glass of her datapad, a new reflection joined her own.

It was pale. It was smiling.

Her breath caught.

She looked up, -- just as the Ice Cream Man brought the hammer down.

He didn’t strike her.

The heavy, worn hammer crushed the containment unit. The Core fractured.

It didn’t explode. It unleashed.

A giant shadow-serpent, a thing of pure, lightless rage, tore itself free from the broken housing. It shrieked, a psychic howl that rattled Echo’s teeth. A tornado of darkness ripped through the clearing as hundreds of smaller shadows were sucked from the trees, swirling around the serpent as it grew, raging in a vortex of dust, leaves, and smoke.

Then, as fast as it had appeared, the serpent shot past them, a black comet streaking deep into the Forbidden Zone.

Silence fell.

Ghost had already moved, placing himself between the students and the intruder, hand on his sidearm.

The Ice Cream Man didn’t move. He simply pointed his hammer in the direction the serpent had gone. His voice was muffled and hollow behind the porcelain mask.

“It returns to its master,” he said. “Your cursed friend, Yoon Jihoon, is that direction.”

The words hit them like a physical blow.

“What?” Minjo whispered, her scientific certainty shattering. “Who… who are you?”

The Ice Cream Man lifted his free hand to his face. With a soft click, he unhooked the mask and let it fall.

He wasn’t human. His face was sharp and pale, a smile that was too wide, with teeth that looked like they could crack bone, and his eyes burned with a feral amber light.

“I am Hwan, Guardian of the Barrier,” he said, voice now clear and cold, like gravel and frost. “And you’re not going anywhere, not without a real guide.”

Engine Room: The Museum of Catastrophes (Escape from Club Apophis, 23)

(click enlarge)

STORYLINE: Holo-posters bloomed across the Forbidden Zone like invasive flowers of propaganda:

WELCOME HOME, PRINCE LATHANDRO.

THE BOY WHO BURNED AND LIVED.

Each one showed the same impossible boy, chin lifted, skin radiant, uniform immaculate, -- a messiah forged from vanity and marketing code. They covered the ruins wall to wall, their light spilling into puddles of rust-red water.

Then the light began to die.

A storm of shadows moved through the alley, swallowing sound as it came. The Ruler of the Night walked at its heart, displeasure made flesh. Every poster he passed convulsed, flickered, and went dark, as if ashamed to exist beneath his gaze.

Lucien’s side project had metastasized into blasphemy.

It was time to end it.

The Ruler descended the spiral of basalt stairs beneath Club Apophis, each step a deeper fall into Lucien’s obsession. The air grew colder, heavy with incense, static, and something older than both. He found him, of course, in the heart of his latest folly: "The Museum of Catastrophes."

The chamber was circular and immense, built from polished obsidian that drank the light. Power streaked through the seams of the floor, humming with a parasitic energy the Ruler found abhorrent.

At its center, lay the museum’s newest exhibit: Yoon Jihoon.

The comatose student was draped in military green, his body arranged like a saint prepared for resurrection. Silver IV lines pulsed with blood, and great holographic calamities flickered around him in worshipful orbit: the Library of Alexandria on fire, Atlantis drowning below the waves, dinosaurs screaming as the sky split open.

Lucien knelt beside him, cradling Jihoon’s limp body in a grotesque parody of the Pietà: a madonna made of silk and mania. His voice trembled through wet laughter. Mascara bled down his cheeks like spilled ink.

"He's beautiful, isn't he?"

The Ruler regarded him for a long, weighted silence, molten gold eyes steady as judgment.

"I assisted in this body's recovery as a mercy, Lucien, so the child could safely pass with dignity. What happened to free will? He did not choose you. He did not consent to be exhibited like this."

MasterGin suddenly lurched to his feet, screaming, "HE CRIED FOR HIS MOMMY TO SAVE HIM FROM THOSE INCOMPETENT HUMAN BUTCHERS!" His voice cracked. He shook with outrage, tears of genuine grief and fury rolling down his face. "They were going to cut him up… Butcher my darling Lathandro like an animal!"

The Ruler’s expression barely shifted. “Lies,” he said softly. “Your ego could not bear to see your creation in the hands of lesser beings.”

Lucien’s laughter curdled into a sneer. “You know nothing. He’s special. It’s right in front of your nose and you’re too blind, too jealous, to see it!”

He gestured wildly toward the boy. "When was the last time you saw a fledgling burned by the sun and live?"

The Ruler froze. His gaze drifted to the youth on the chaise. The burn scars were gone. A new, chilling thought raced through him.

Was there anyone still left inside?

His golden eyes closed; a deep breath drew in like a storm contained. He reached out with his will, ancient and absolute.

“Show me,” he commanded. The chamber dissolved.

He found himself standing in a ruined stadium, bleachers collapsed in spectral silence, ash drifting like red snow through a dead wind.

On the pitcher’s mound stood Jihoon, rumpled hoodie, scorched sneakers, the human remnant. His voice cracked the silence.

“He thinks I called for him. Did you? Did you deliver us to that MONSTER?!”

Across the field, his reflection stood on home plate: Lathandro, long white bangs falling from under his cap, striking in a crisp red uniform.

“Relax, bookworm,” Lathandro scoffed. “MasterGin would rather cut off his own limbs than hurt us. You’re such a timid wuss. Someone needed to save us, and it wasn’t going to be your inept girlfriend. She only knows how to fix machines.”

“Take that back!” Jihoon’s fists clenched. “Minjo was trying to save me!”

Lathandro laughed, low and cruel. “Her bad choices lit us on fire, idiot.” He tossed a baseball into the air and struck it lazily. It arced upward, burning like a flare as it vanished into the smoky distance. “The monsters are the only ones who can save us. Stop pretending you’re human. We don’t belong with them anymore. That life ended in flames. You died. I’m the one keeping us alive.”

“Bullshit! I’m not the one who got us killed!” Jihoon hurled a chunk of broken cement. “I’m not the one allergic to sunlight!”

Lathandro easily dodged, smacking the rock with his bat, sending it out of the stadium. For an instant, a forked tongue flicked from his mouth.

Jihoon staggered back, horror dawning. His fingers brushed his own lips, as if afraid to find the same split hiding there. No. The thing wearing his face wasn't him.

The Ruler’s mind recoiled, not in fear, but in clarity, and the faint taste of something ancient and terrible. He had seen the tongue. This was no fledgling. It was an infestation.

“You saw him, didn't you?” Lucien’s plea cracked the silence.

The Ruler’s senses snapped back to the chamber. Lucien’s voice was too close, wet, trembling, desperate.

“Please… you have to save him.” His tone wavered between command and prayer. “The old rite... the Opening of the Mouth. Do it for me. For us.”

The Ruler regarded him in silence. Lucien’s perfect white hair was tangled, his gossamer sheath smeared with blood from a cut on his wrist. He looked ancient now, stripped of glamour, a frightened creature clinging to his dying art. The Ruler sighed, and placed a gentle hand on Gin’s quivering shoulder.

“He lives,” he said softly. “But he is not alone.”

As he spoke, the lights dimmed. The floor began to pulse with that dull, parasitic rhythm. The light from the holograms bent toward the chaise, devoured by an unseen gravity. The boy’s body suddenly arched, a silent scream as the dark energy surged.

The Ruler's eyes flared gold. The vessel moved.

“Lucien,” he gasped, “you are meddling with forces you do not understand." He raced to the main outlet and yanked the plug free. The chamber plunged into absolute darkness, the only sound the sudden, choking sobs of MasterGin.

"Stop this foolishness!" the Ruler bellowed. "Stop trying to revive him with this cursed technology." He stepped closer, the air tightening around them. “I will perform the ritual in one week. I will awaken him, -- on one condition.”

“Anything,” Gin whispered in the dark.

“You will uphold your own sacred creed of free will,” the Ruler said. “If he asks to leave… you will let him.”

Lucien laughed lightly, too quickly. “Of course,” he breathed while his head, almost imperceptibly, shook no.

Jihoon’s chest rose once in a shallow breath, his eyelids fluttering open before sinking again into darkness.

Neither of them saw it....

Its the last days for this round of the Engine Room. So many great items, I wish I could have worked in more to show. For this post, I was inspired by the PFC Serpens furniture. It worked perfectly for my story idea. The chaise is wonderfully made with built in poses, and PBR texture hud options to change the look. it includes a floor lamp and incense burner. ...Jihoon is wearing the Maxwell outfit by ONEDAY. This look includes the boots built right in. ...from About Love, I used the Cap, it just worked great with the military look. It has hair with heart shape bang and cap rigged, or separate, and texture hud. ...The Silvanus hair by Sinktiklia is gorgeous and has fits for men and women. Plus the bangs are unrigged so you can move them around. I ended yo using just the bangs, and turned them askew since they were unrigged. It helped with my character pose so much. ... From Botanical is the Candle Clutter set. These candles well made and already in placement for fast decorating. Perfect for halloween, or romance. I can't get over how convincing that candle flame is. Well done.

For my ambitious ongoing story, threaded through multiple events, if I'm able to keep going, the next section will venture into new territory as the rescue team enters the Zone. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the love and encouragement.

Cyber Fair: The Glass Coffin (Escape from Club Apophis, 19)

STORYLINE: Dr. Seojin. A face that wore the sterile ambition of a man who catalogued patients as puzzles, spoke into his datapad without once meeting Minjo’s eyes. His voice was clipped, impersonal, like a technician reading a broken instrument.

“Case of Yoon Jihoon. Witnessed public combustion, presumed fourth-degree photothermal trauma. Current damage consistent with augment rejection cascade. Recommend immediate transfer to a private facility for liability containment.”

“Absolutely not.” Minjo was to her feet in an instant, brandishing the digital authority of her guardianship like a blade. “You can submit your proposal, and the name of that private facility, in writing. I will evaluate it.”

A flash of irritation crossed the doctor's polished features. He fled the room muttering a string of medical jargon that sounded suspiciously like insults.

The doctors were a problem, vultures in clean lab coats. Minjo watched them all with the predatory stillness of a gatekeeper, scanning their credentials and dismissing anyone with a whiff of black-market biotech or, worse, GIN AESTHETICA™. Paranoia was a logical response. She would not let Dr. Ginerva’s creatures finish what they had begun.

The world shrank to the size of the room. Jihoon lay suspended inside a sealed therapeutic tank, -- a glass coffin filled with a shimmering, oxygenated biogel. Wrapped head to toe in white smart-bandages, he looked almost serene; the only other presences were the soft blink of the vitals monitor and Minjo, keeping a solitary vigil.

The university had expelled him. While she packed his life into boxes —textbooks, anime posters—with a cold, methodical fury.

Days acquired a grim rhythm: monitor the tank, cross-reference charts, keep the journal. Each night she performed a private, clinical ritual. With wire clippers from her robotics kit she snipped the glossy black claws that pushed through the bandages. The sharp snap echoed in the quiet. Then she placed the jagged fragments of obsidian-like keratin into a specimen vial, labeled it, then added it to the macabre collection in her diagnostic kit.

Guilt was not a variable; it was a constant, an acid that corroded logic. The memory of the baseball game was an ache that never faded. He had trusted her, and she, in her clinical arrogance, had armed him with nothing more than cheap sunscreen against a star. It was his scream—a sound she heard every time she closed her eyes. In that final, agonizing moment, it was her name he had shrieked, a hand reaching for her through the flames, pleading, "Save me."

A single, hot tear rolled down her cheek. She wiped it away with an angry, impatient swipe of her sleeve before turning back to her journal.

The blood transfusions were the strangest variable. The bags of synthetic O-negative would simply… vanish. In her journal, beneath a string of complex equations, Minjo wrote three words and circled them until the pen tore the page: ...Signs of Vampirism?

When a new surgical team scheduled an amputation for his arms, Minjo refused. She made them unwrap the limbs. The room fell silent. The flesh beneath was not carbonized, but a latticework of raw, pink scars over newly formed tissue. Damaged, yes. Horrifically so. But healing.

With a sigh, she sank back in the stiff hospital chair. Her gaze settled on a sketch of the mysterious Black Snakeskin Box surrounded by question marks. It had been hidden under the floorboards of Jihoon's bedroom, a secret he hid above all others. Why? Stranger still, when she opened it, the contents of an exotic pricey sunscreen disappeared, and in its place materialized a note, "Happy now, Bitch?"

Later that night, a woman she didn't recognize approached. She was dressed more like an intern than a nurse, and she moved with upbeat attitude that was more unnerving than comforting. A clinical facemask obscured her mouth, but her eyes—obvious cybernetic models—crinkled with a practiced warmth.

"Oh you poor thing. Have you been here all day? You look like you're about to fall over," she said, her voice a low, soothing hum.

Minjo’s internal database of hospital staff came up empty for her half covered face.

The nurse chuckled, a low, soothing hum. “It’s understandable. I was at that game too," she confessed, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "I don't believe a word they're saying about him. He's the victim here. You are a good girlfriend to him.” She placed a steaming cup in Minjo’s hands. “But you need to care for yourself too. Here, Chamomile. It will help you get some real rest."

Minjo’s analytical mind should have dissected the gesture, but her defenses were worn to nothing. For the first time, someone saw her pain.

The tea was warm and sweet. She drank it down, and a thick, dreamless curtain fell with astonishing speed. Outside the hospital, the street erupted into a symphony of chaos, screaming with sirens and the sounds of a violent chase, but Minjo was already gone, lost in a slumber so profound it felt less like rest and more like a system shutdown. She was too tired to care, and for the first time in a month, she did not dream of fire.

A soft knock pulled her from the depths. Minjo blinked, the grey morning light feeling abrasive and alien. Jihoon's three closest friends, Echo, Ghost, and Plague, stood in the doorway, their arms laden with cheap flowers and well loved retro game cartridges.

Echo opened her mouth to speak, but her eyes darted past Minjo. “Where’s Jihoon?”

Panic seized her. The glass coffin was empty.

She bolted to the nurses' station. “Yoon Jihoon,” she demanded. “Where is he?”

The admitting nurse, a woman with a practiced smile, tapped at her console. “Mr. Yoon was discharged late last night into the care of his legal guardian.”

“Impossible,” Minjo’s voice rose. “His parents are dead. I’m his medical proxy.”

“The paperwork is all in order.” The nurse swiveled her monitor around. On the signature line was a name that felt like a curse: Dr. Lucien Ginerva.

“That’s forged,” Minjo choked out.

“I assure you, a high-ranking officer verified everything.” She pulled up the security footage.

The timestamp read 2:17 AM. A towering, broad-shouldered police officer stood beside MasterGin. Between them Jihoon, still wrapped in bandages, was wheeled out on a gurney. Gone.

Echo gasped, pointing at the screen. "That's him! The officer from the crash!"

A wave of dizziness washed over Minjo. Her gaze fell on the half-empty cup. Drugged. The thought wasn't a question; it was a diagnosis. The ice in her gut flash-froze into white-hot, analytical fury. They had treated her like an obstacle. They would find she was a problem that fought back.

"Ghost, Echo, Plague," she commanded, her voice cutting through the sterile air. "Come with me. I have something to show you."

It's time to say goodbye to this round of CyberFair, and Season 2 of Escape from Club Apophis. Yes, I know I said there would be no more posts for CF, but I had a burning need to tell more story and show more things. So BONUS post! Androgyny Event: Escape from Club Apophis, 8

STORYLINE: In a sanctum buried beneath the neon veins of New Seoul, Dr. Lucien Ginerva reclined like a bored demigod on a hovering chaise. His clothing, if one dared call it that, was little more than suggestion. A silk slip clung carelessly to bone-pale skin; a fur wrap threatened to slither off one narrow shoulder. His legs, crossed and gleaming, ended in stilettos sharp enough to draw blood.

Around him, floating screens flickered and pulsed, casting warped shadows across the cathedral of vanity he ruled. Scattered below his heels were piles of glimmering flex-glass dossiers, stacked like offerings at some grotesque altar. Each one bore the idealized face of a desperate hopeful: socialites craving eternal youth, influencers pleading for patented jawlines, CEOs requesting “predator eyes” for boardroom intimidation. Their holographic portraits shimmered faintly in the gloom.

Unread. Uncared for.

“Cancel them all,” he said, voice like poison poured through a crystal flute.

A delicate chime answered. “But MasterGin, tomorrow is your touch-up session with the American president.”

Gin’s pale, glossed lips barely moved. “Tell him I am otherwise engaged. An emergency of the highest aesthetic priority.”

“Sir,” the AI persisted, clipped and clinical, “He has waited five years. Protocol—”

“Then tell that spineless little statesman to pack a bib and a bucket,” Gin snapped, silk slithering as he leaned forward. “Because if he dares complain, I’ll melt his face off live during his precious State of the Union address.”

The AI hesitated, beeped in protest—then fell silent. Calendars shimmered, appointments evaporating as if scrubbed by invisible hands.

“Good,” MasterGin purred. “I don’t want to look at that hideous old fart anymore.”

The AI, ever rational, replied: “But sir, you are 2,281 years older than—”

A hidden button clicked beneath Gin’s long finger. The AI’s voice died mid-sentence.

Silence fell. A faint trace of clove cigarette curled through the air.

With a sigh, MasterGin reclined once more. His eyes slid toward the mirror.

“It’s showtime, Little Worm.”

His clawed fingers danced across the chaise's sleek interface. A screen blinked alive with liquid ripples as the system connected.

LOGIN: EVILQUEEN
PASSWORD: poisonedapple

The image stabilized. Jihoon’s dorm came into view.

The student stood alone in his dorm, wearing one of the latest deliveries: haute couture lingerie, designed to seduce. The fabric clung to him like a whisper, sinfully tailored, cruelly perfect. He moved awkwardly at first, guilty and confused, then slowly began to pose. One hand rose to the curve of his neck. His other hand, hesitating, hovered near his cheek. A flush crept up under his skin, darkening the angry red burn Minjo had left there, a bruise of guilt made visible. He tilted his chin. Bent a knee. Swayed a hip… exactly as MasterGin had on the red carpet.

And in that moment, something ancient smiled back from the mirror, as if it approved.

A low, pleased rumble stirred in MasterGin’s chest, like a king cobra purring.

“Oh, you delicious copycat,” he cooed, reclining on his chaise like a fallen god. “I didn’t even train you yet.”

He raised a flute of something red and unholy, toasting the mirror feed.

“I think it’s time for some positive reinforcement.”

Beside him, the white snakeskin box pulsed faintly, clinical and elegant, echoing the flicker of black snakeskin box Jihoon’s dorm. The signal link was alive and strong.

MasterGin tapped the screen to zoom in, eager to savor Jihoon’s expression as he pulled the new items from the box: a sleek skincare kit and a pale bottle labeled with shimmering text. SPF 100 Nano Enhanced Sunscreen. As Jihoon read the notecard tucked inside, confusion bloomed on his face.

“Nice sunburn, Little Worm.”

MasterGin roared with laughter, teeth flashing too sharp in the surveillance gloom.

“You’re welcome!” he cried across dimensions. “Mommy takes good care of her special baby.”

But his joy was short-lived.

From offscreen came the crash of the dorm door bursting open.

Jihoon spun in alarm, face flushing so hard the burn scar on his cheek darkened. He snatched up a bedsheet and clutched it to his chest, stumbling backward like a cornered animal.

Gin lurched forward in his chair, claws clicking over glass as he scrambled to reposition the surveillance feeds. The cameras pivoted with mechanical whines, zeroing in on the chaos.

“Temu Scully,” he snarled. “Don’t you know how to knock, bitch?”

Minjo stalked into view, eyes lit with fury, a crude homemade scanner already glowing in her hand. “You were going to hide this from me,” she said, her voice cold and sharp. “Where did this designer trash even come from, Jihoon?”

Her gaze swept the room with surgical precision. Jihoon babbled a string of excuses, half denial, half panic, as he backed away from her, feet tangled in the bedsheet.

Minjo ignored him entirely. Her scanner ticked like a Geiger counter as she moved with a predator’s focus. And then it shrieked. A full spike of interference, as if it had struck raw data. A cloaked signal detected.

She looked up.

Locked eyes with the mirror.

Across the glass, faint serpentine runes flickered, slithering like molten silver just beginning to boil.

“Wait,” Gin barked, straightening in alarm.

But Minjo was already moving fast.

She sprinted toward the mirror, arm raised.

The feed convulsed.

Then static.

Transmission severed.

“NO!”

MasterGin hurled his drink at the screen. The crystal exploded in a flash of sparks and smoke. Gin collapsed back into his throne, face twisted with rage, strangling a crushed velvet pillow like it owed him an apology.

Suddenly, a hush fell over the surveillance chamber.

The velvet pillow slipped from Gin’s fingers. His breathing slowed, caught between a growl and a gasp.

Not quiet. Dead. As if sound had been vacuumed out of the space, along with the air. The cyan glow from his chaise lounge sputtered, dimming like a dying ember.

Then came the hum.

Low. Inhuman.

It rolled through the walls like a slow avalanche, vibrating the glass, the screens, the bones of the room itself.

Gin turned slowly as the air turned cold.

Every surface in the surveillance chamber went completely black.

Then one monitor, dead just moments ago, flared to life.

A silhouette emerged. Towering. Cloaked in something darker than shadow, plated in ancient battle-armor that shimmered like wet obsidian.

The Ruler of the Night.

His gold eyes glowed like hellfire. Unblinking. Locked directly on Gin.

MasterGin’s breath hitched. He immediately averted his gaze, dropped to his knees, and bowed deeply.

“Caught me again, Darling?” he said with a trembling smirk. “Naked ambition. Always such a hazard in my line of work.”

All around him, the mirrored glass began to crack.

And that was when he knew, he was in very big trouble.

Androgyny Event is the inspiration for this whole series, and MasterGin himself is my top model for androgyny. So naturally, I took some time on for this reveal for him, I hope you enjoyed it!
